Just wondering about an issue I have at the moment with my macbook pro. I got this flashing folder symbol appear during bootup. I know this means that the mac cannot read my hard drive. So I put in my installation disk and boot from that and when I try to reinstall osx there's no disk showing in disk utilities.

Does this mean that hard drive basically dead? Lucky I had everything backed up google drive..

Sounds like it. Any clicking noises from it recently.

Get an external enclosure for the drive, pop it in and then check. If you have an external hard drive atm, you can run Mac OSX from that to ease you over during that time. I've had this issue recently as well, ended up just being a dodgy cable, cost me €20 to replace. Process was quite easy as well, just a few screws and connectors to remove. Only problem was getting this tiny little orange cable back into its connector for the IR blaster. Got it in comfortably in the end after some fiddling around.

I got the new hdd today, wasn't recognised either. Played around for it a bit until disk ultilties finally recognised it. Installed snow leopard from the disk, grand. Shut down the computer to come back to the white screen of death. Booted from the disk again, hdd not shown in disk utilities...must be the cable...

Where did you get the cable for 20?

    eBay: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/251421011024?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

The one I got, but you'll probably need a different one if the machine is different.

Ah lads, this laptop is giving is breaking my heart. I installed the cable. Booted up great. I started getting kernel panics, so i reinstalled snow leopard. Now if I move the screen, it just blanks to colours of black, blue and multicoloured (kinda like tie dye) The hinge was always loose on my mac, but it never bothered me so I never bothered fixing. Going to mactivate...
