Had a 2.0 litre passat with the same engine, and it was a thirsty slow machine. Was hardy for the length of time I had it though.

You'd want to be doing a lot of driving to justify the price premium a tdi commands though. If you just want that look, and it's cheap (because its old and getting less and less saleable) there's probably worse cars.

A 2litre Mondeo of the same vintage will out go and handle one to a serious degree. But each to their own;)

    Get the 1.8T version.

I have this, mid 20s city, 37-41mpg on motorways.
Known problem is blocked gauze in the oil pick up in the sump. No way of checking, just make sure to change the oil every 6k miles approx and make sure fully synthetic. Apart from that nothing out of the ordinary to watch for.

Would try source a 1.8t as others have said. More torque and lower tax bracket:)

2.0 litre only puts out 130bhp, the 1.8t puts out 163bhp.

In 2002 you could get 150,163 and 190. Most common here is 150bhp. Be Careful to as when I was buying a few told me it was a 163 but checking the engine code in the boot proved otherwise.

    Get the 1.8T version.

+ Quattro so you avoid that horrible VAG torque steer. ;)
