There are ways to check mileage but there is no 100% guarantee. The most obvious way is just common sense. A few cars in the UK will have false full service history documents etc like in ireland so the best way is really just to use your head. Watch out for excessive wear and tear would be the main one.

What mileage is on the car?

Does it have a service history? Being a UK car it should have one, if it is partially missing or not with the car then walk away. If it does have a service history then you can verify it in conjunction with a car history check by ringing the garages that serviced it and verify what work was done at those times.

Is it for sale private or through a dealer?

There's no way I would touch a UK car that was for sale private in Ireland, most likely the VLC will not be in the sellers name and the whole sale becomes one big mess.

It's advertised with 42000 miles on the clock shich is fairly low for an 09 but I only average about 10000miles a yeah so I can see how it could be really. Also I've hear things about the VW 2.0tdi engine anyone have any experience with them are they reliable

There are no major issues with that 2.0 litre diesel engine as in the MkVI Golf it is the CR engine. The issues you heard of are with certain variants of the older 2.0 litre PD engine.

42k miles is very low for a now 5 year old diesel car, I'd be scrutinising the service history on that. Also what sort of driving do you do? If it is all short runs then you would be better off with a petrol car, modern diesel don't like short runs.

    A lot of 09 2.0s are 120bhp.
Think it was a stopgap till the 1.6 TDI came out.

110bhp actually but in the UK they sold a lot of 140bhp and 170bhp too.

    Meant to say 110 :D

Point was to not assume its gonna be 140 or 170.

It wouldn't be much use in clocking a car like that just to knock a couple of miles off. I'd be more comfortable buying a well used diesel considering the fragility of some of the new diesels. They don't like short runs.

You're going to know if it's clocked by much anyway by the W&T inside the car.

A lot of UK diesel cars spend their life on the motorway network over there. They can be in excellent shape despite having high mileage on them. A 5 year old diesel Golf from the UK could potentially have well upwards of 100k miles on it and is a perfect candidate for clocking, it can be bought cheaper at auction, clocked and sold on for decent money over here. Clocking is big business because people still don't do proper due diligence when buying.

Egr valves are giving a lot of trouble on the diesel mark 6's. expensive and a pig of a job to do. mine was done under warranty but vw said it would have cost €900 parts and labour.

nothing distinctive from most other engine problems, heater plug light (coil shaped) comes on, car goes into limp mode. pull in, turn car off for a minute, start up, it should be ok for another while. but no guarantee when itll let you dont. i dont notice any difference since new egr was fitted. car drives the same.
