cut to black.... ....i guess tony looks up at the door, we hear the bell...if the series of shots were to follow through we would have seen Meadow from tonys POV walk into the diner.

But his POV we see is black....ergo, yer man that walked into the toilet opened the door, gun in hand and popped tony in the side of the head. He never saw it coming so neither does the audience.

I just think to leave it soo open to interpretation was widly indulgent of the showrunner.....ego run amock imo.

My interpretation of it is that there is no ending, and that the five series are just a ten year window into that life.

If anything the ending made me feel like Tony Soprano for five minutes, waiting for something to happen, always on edge. Feeling like you are about to be shot at any minute. I thought it was fantastic.

    No way.

Dexter has the worst ending to a tv show I've yet to see. I wouldn't even recommend the show to anyone after the last three seasons of utter bull****.

    The Sopranos ending was perfect.

I thought it was a very poor way to finish it. I like closure in shows/movies, I don't like having to resort to "maybe this happened...".

Six Feet Under, Breaking Bad, great examples of how to finish a show. Sopranos, not so much. Still a brilliant show though.

I always interpreted the end of the Sopranos as Tony was clipped and never saw it coming, as per the OP. But I don't think it was a terrible ending. Although I admit, after 6 years of investment in the character, it was a little frustrating. I would like to have seen some of the aftermath.

Tony was shot by the guy who went into the toilet, you won't get much more closure than that

the way the ending was foreshadowed throughout the final season qualifies the ending as genius for me. I think it's perfect.

    This explains it very well

Thought it was a great way to wrap up The Soprano's. Leave it up to the viewers imagination what happened. Some could say that's a cop out. But people took varying things from the show. Some would have liked Tony to get clipped while others would have wanted him to pay no price. The ending allowed everyone to be happy if they were cool with drawing up their own conclusion.

I really don't get people that are too lazy to interpret that ending.

    Bell, Tony POV

    Bell Tony POV

    Bell Tony POV

    Bell Black

Tony is dead. His family were killed with him as they had the onion rings as a viaticum. He was surrounded by American images, the boy scouts, a trucker with USA on his cap, a young couple with the boy in military dress throw back to the 60s, the shooter being at 3 O clock to Tony as Christopher warned him when he came back from his coma "Three O Clock Tony".

The ending was perfect. If people are too lazy not to have EVERYTHING spoon fed to them or have a gooey slow mo hugging session ala Lost then too bad for them. The ending was art, genius and justified the show that went before it.

Probably the best thought out ending ever.Shakespearian in its quality.Never mind the fact people are still talking about it.

 Tony aint dead, he seen the guy going into the toilet, knows what he's up to, goes in after him and gives him a seeing to - he does this on the doorbell sound, emphasizing the business before family ideal - it has to be blacked out otherwise its not the end.

One of the best endings ever. It allows you to interpret it as you want, which for me said a great deal more than if you'd seen Tony dead, face down in his onion rings.

No interpretation needed. Nothing else happened, nothing else was filmed and nothing else was written.

They all went for something to eat and that's all we're seeing in the life of the Sopranos. I was quite happy with it. Great series.

Greatest ending to a show ever in my opinion. was cleverly wrote where you pick up small things throughout the whole series like chris saying 3 o'clock and tony and bobby discussing how death is just like darkness, which lead you to your own conclusion about the ending. No ending of a show since has even came close in my opinion.

I don't think Shakespeare ending any of his plays by fading to black, could be wrong. Some people like ambiguous endings. I don't, so I didn't like the end of the Sopranos. Don't know how people are making definitive statements that Tony was shot.

Because it's been explained and even the writers said he died.

    Lol

When you quote something as a fact you should be able to provide a link to back it up. I don't know whether you're mistaken or not, that's why I asked for a link.

David Chase did not say he died

No they didnt. They hinted at it, but it was never definitively explained. Nor should it be.

A nods as good as a hint.

Didn't like the ending at the time but it's a fantastic ending.

My opinion, Tony's dead, many reasons why but the simplest reason is the lack of music at the end, every other episode had it, it's confirming Bobby's discussion about death with Tony, it's just black at the end.

As far as I remember, they said that to say he died would be a fair assumption, but they didnt confirm what happened to him. Which was the idea of the ending in the first place. If you want to believe he died, great. If you want to believe he lived, great. Simple as that really.

Spoilers? You know the episode aired in 2007?

It was left up to the viewer to decide. I liked that at the time...six and a half years ago.

The viewer was whacked. We didn't see it coming and everything went black.

I agree Tony is dead, but why would you say the shooter killed the others as well? As with any gang hit, were the family (innocents) not exempt? I assume he shot Tony and bolted towards the door.

Its a spoiler for someone who has not seen it isn't it? Best safe than sorry when starting a thread imo.
