I'm in my first year of college and I was interested in getting a summer internship or some work experience with one of the mainstream media outlets (if possible), who should I contact and what is the best way to go about it?

If you're a first year, then you're looking at a local media organisation, i.e. a county paper or radio station.

Your best bet is to get contact details for the news editor, tell them your story and politely request a short period of work experience. Hopefully they will respond positively as it is a boost to have your name on a few articles to build your portfolio and they will know this.

Be prepared to work for free - local papers and radio stations aren't big buck businesses and you may have to do a bit of unpaid time to get your name out there. With a bit of luck, this might be short-term pain for long-term gain if you impress the editor and if an opportunity arises in the future.

    Best of luck!
