Passat fault - Engine Fault Garage!

Hi, my 2007 Passat 2.0 Tdi is giving a fault when i start it sometimes. When I put the key in the ignition and preheat, the preheat coil light flashes and when I try to start the car sounds rough and the message "Engine Fault Garage!" Comes up on the dash and the car won't start. If I try it a few times it seems to fix itself.
I thought it was a key problem so I swapped keys. It seemed fine for a few days but it's started happening again today.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Sounds like a heater (glow) plug is gone. If that's the case it would get it harder to start, particularly in the cold weather.

The glow plug light doubles up as a fault indicator light on VWs. If it's flashing it means the ecu has detected a fault that needs immediate attention. Get it to a garage with decent VW diagnostics.

A lumy idle would suggest a clogged up EGR valve.

Thanks for the info. I'll head to the garage in the morning and see what they say. I usually go to a non VW garage so I'm not sure if they'll be able to use their diagnostics on this.

Dropped it into my mechanic this morning and he said it's the Ignition. He can't do it because it's a main dealer job and he said it's a fairly expensive job. Has anyone had this done before? Any idea on how much it will cost and how long it takes?

There's no 'ignition' on a diesel engine. I'd get a second opinion. Where are you located? There might be a good indie nearby.

Not that Im saying the ops mechanic is correct but he more than likely means the ignition barrel or key socket/starter button.

Although a car with no ignition, that you could start purely with telekinesis would be cool too.
