A "new" customer is someone with a new e-mail address. Gmail users can make lots of new addresses that will route through to their normal address just by adding full stops into the address, e.g.
yourname@gmail.com
your.name@gmail.com
y.o.u.r.name@gmail.com
will all go to yourname@gmail.com.
