Hi guys I understand there are many topics on the above topic but I just wanted updated information. I'm currently off 16 and have been cut 5 shots since last year and I'm happy with my off the shelf set of clubs. I'm planning on putting allot into my game and I'm having a couple of lessons at present which are working out great. My question really is would a custom set really make any difference to my game and if so were to go American golf, mcguirks, halfpenny or a club pro?fore golf is a little out of my price point at the moment I know they are probably the most well known as that is all they do, if anyone had any advice on the subject or experience on the above I'd be greatly thanks.

    Wouldnt make any difference.

What height, size are you? Do you swing particularly quickly/slowly?

Off the shelf irons will probably cover most people of an average height & build.

Most golf shops have some sort of technology in them now.

You could try mcguirks in kinsealy if your heart is ser in getting fitted, they have a range attached to the golf shop, and a pro out there who'll do a custom fit for irons. Think there is a €30 charge. cheaper than foregolf & they gave me my spec sheet when I went to them so you're not going to be tied to buying from them.

You can't say they wouldn't make any difference. That's just nonsense. He could be playing with clubs that aren't suited to him at all. But you seem to know it won't make a difference so why bother getting fitted OP.

Get fitted if you are buying new clubs. The big golf shops will probably do it for free so why not get it done. And the reality is it will make a difference. You could be playing with clubs that are too short for you or too heavy or the wrong lie angle. Adjustment on any of those will make a massive difference.

Hard to say really how much difference it makes. I suppose it depends on your height and swing. I'm 6'3 and played with a standard set for years and presumed it made no real difference to me. However I decided on getting new irons last Septmber and got custom fitted. Since then I've gone from 7 to 5 and I'd put that mainly down to improved iron play. However I presumed given my height that I'd need a lot of adjustments to a standard set but the only one I actually needed was an extra inch in length in the shafts and after that was it, the lie and loft etc were all standard. So it made a big difference to me as I feel like I can stay much more upright in my posture during the shot but I was actually surprised at how close to standard I was able to use despite being so much taller than average.

So in a roundabout way I suppose I'm saying that while it made a big difference to me I'm not sure how neccessary it is for someone of average height

Go get fitted, it will do no harm at all. You are not just getting fitted for the club spec but you are also affording your self the time to try different brands and models, while being monitored by some one who can give you some sound help and advice.

If you've lost 5 shots with them it's unlikely your gear is horribly wrong for you. However, if your going to change anyway you would be foolish not to get fitted as most places will do it for the price of the clubs....

I'd say get fitted , I chopped and changed clubs every time I had a bad round.

I got fitted for new irons two years ago , and have got slightly better prob down to more practice etc.

But now I don't come home after a round and hit eBay looking for new clubs to help me , I just accept it's me not the clubs

It's definitely worth getting fitted especially as you're 6' high as this might affect lie angle etc. Think also about if the irons are offset or not. But finish your course of lessons first and discuss the possible change of clubs with your pro.
I've got clubs fitted by McGuirks, Lepordstown pro and Foregolf and when I was playing off 10+hc, being fitted by McGuirks or similar is more then good enough.
It also depends on how keen you are. If you only play once a month, perfectly fitted clubs won't alone make good golf....

Ping are doing a free fitting service in my local club on February 7th but I'm sure they are probably on tour so you could check with them or your own local club.
