Hi, I hope someone can help me here, I'm not finding an answer on my own!! My Dad is not well and does not have long to go. My Dad was a book collector and literature enthusiast. Two of my brothers remember that Dad wanted an extract from Ulysses to be read at his funeral. They think it was a part where it was morning and Bloom was walking around Dublin, in good humour......I know I'm being very vague, I've never read it and know nothing about it. Is there a particular part that might be suitable for a funeral? I would be very grateful for any help.

Sorry to hear about your father.

The chapter you are referring to is either chapter 4 "Calypso" or chapter 5 "Lotus Eaters". In Calypso Bloom is pottering around at home in the morning, goes down the road to buy a pork kidney, comes home and brings up the mail and breakfast to his wife in bed.

In Lotus Eaters Bloom heads into Dublin to the post office to collect a letter for himself. He reads the letter in town, potters around a bit, goes into a church. He buys a bar of lemon soap in Swiny's chemist on Westland Row (the shop is still there to this day). He then heads off to the baths and the chapter ends.

The next episode, episode 6 "Hades", involves Bloom and acquanitances going to the funeral of the late Paddy Dignam. This chapter has many meditations on death etc.

    Hope that helps

Thank you so much HP, my brother is going to look through those episodes and see if there is anything appropriate there. I really appreciate your reply. It is a very sad time but it will be nice to give him a fitting send off. Thank you again :)

No problem, glad to help. One other thing I would say is that the chapters aren't officially titled "Calypso" etc, and chapter breaks are just demonstrated with variable symbols (depending on the edition) so you might just have to flick through manually until you get to the 4th chapter.

This is what the 4th chapter looks like so you will recognise it: http://www.online-literature.com/james_joyce/ulysses/4/
