So yea, a 1.4 fiesta tcdi is awful to spend time.

    awful :(

but since my rta I'm without motorbike and will be for the future :(

so i would like something to replace the buzz from the bke while being somewhat reasonable

this bus - http://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/renault-megane-r26-williams-f1-edition/5563359 - has popped up on my radar a few times.

Was up for over 2 months initially at 8.5k

if the belt and w/p are done and fsh, bit of a bargain i think now. 2L turbo wouldn't be bad either.

my other choice is a CL7 accord euro r. 2L na but 'vtec yo' etc etc.

    possibly...at a push (dependant on insurance)...focus st.

not pushed on 2/4 door tbh.

my last and crazy option is the luxobarge thread but 30yo biker with only named driver xp...doubt I can get anything in that.

so...does anyone know the megane in question? any opinions either way?

or the accord. i like the cl1 model shape, i like the straight edges and the 2.2 lump but the cl7 looks more refined.

Why not bring the megane for a test drive and see how you like it ?

I own a Focus ST myself and it's fine as a daily driver with some power/noise

    8yt8.jpg

However if i was buying a weekend toy it would be something abit more focused and abit older, it all depends what you are into though i guess in terms of marque/era etc

300zx/RX-7 Spring to mind in my case anyway

Anyway get out there and drive afew oddball cars, you never know what you might like when i first set out to get a new car i started off wanting an E46 320d then a Golf GTI Mk5 and ended up where i am now.

Focus ST is a great option, they make the right noises, decent power and they look the business.

RX8, TT Quattro or a Clio 197 all decent options too

I missed these kind of threads :D

kaimera - are you saying that you have had absolutely no car insurance in your own name in order to accumulate your own NCB? If that's the case, I think that a performance car may be out of reach regardless of your age :(

    @mm

Pretty much, not in the last number of years. Biking primarily until last Feb :(

~1k on the megane with an online quote.

Most of the performance cars are out, big cc too but around the 2L mark I can manage I think.

AH you're an ex homotorcyclist :P

1k isn't bad at all on that considering!

Once you get one years no claims you will see a fair chunk of that premium drop

For my tuppence, an MR2 - just getting in is an occasion, it goes like a dormouse or a bomb depending on your humour and those lights bobbing in your peripheral vision as it tracks the road like a racer is as close to a ferrari as you'll get for button cash. The novelty just doesn't seem to wear off. Massively under-rated IMO and massively underpriced.

Yea tbh the insurance quotes I know will be high(ish), but I'm not in my 20s anymore and I can add one of the parents as a name driver to help too.

@conzy - rx8 - would love, but would take a rx7 instead and lord knows thats not an option (for a few years!) Not a TT fan either, doesn't do it for me. Clio - would rather the megane for the price difference.

@SG - this will be my daily driver. ~4-500km a week (motorway) and that's before some backroad driving the odd time.

@Nucking - I'd love an mr2, old shape but how do the turbos hold up?

I like the Megane, it's different to the usual stuff.

and the Accord Euro R...have a real soft spot for them. May even be classed as a family saloon for insurance (my old jdm legacy b4 wasn't classed as performance!)

    I'll keep y'all updated anyway.

oh, anything to add to this for me? or here
Good reference guides I've read a few times.

That Megane might just be got on a silly offer.

Great thread. What's the budget? This is something I've thinking about as a second car for a while now as my everyday needs to be sensible. Probably be the summer before I can do it if even.

Anyway I was looking at CL500 which would tick the luxobarge box, there's is an AMG one that has been for sale for a while on done deal for 6k I think but I haven't gone to see it as if going the CL route option it's would need to be Kompressor.

Few Porsche Boxsters for sale around the 7-8k but they could be trouble at that price. I'm also thinking S2000 and lately a Mini Cooper Works even though the mini is considered a girls car.

More I think about it I think go cart like would be more fun as a weekend messing around car than a luxobarge.

Looking forward to what people suggest

Not sure if this would interest you, I have already suggested it to another member but am not sure if he went to look or not but it is an extremely well cared for car.
I have absolutely nothing to do with the sale of it in case anyone think's I may have.
Just doing a friend a favor by suggesting it.

    @vectra

I've thought about the vRS actually. Petrol, obviously :) Nice clean bus there. Defo interested.

Budget...tbh, the megane was 8.5 and I would have done that (with some haggling!). I'd do 8k for the right car but it would want to be a bit special at that. Totally depends on the car, would spend less on something I really liked etc etc.

I'd rather pay the bit more for a car with all the needed servicing done (on time or within reason) than end up with a lemon (old legacy, much as a loved it, think she needed a bit of work...also was getting under 20mpg)

Second that I'm gone into my thrid year of ownsership and seriously tempted to bring it to the track - one of the best driving positions - not the fastest car but a seriously fun one

    edit: mk2 MR2 NA SW20 (1989 - 2000)

    God bless online insurance quotes.

    vRS, ~1500-2k.

Will be making phone calls tomorrow for some proper quotes.

The Megane is fantastic as a proper hardcore drivers car, but might be difficult to live with on an everyday basis? As far as I remember it has plastic windows and is fairly stripped out, would be very tiring on a long journey.

Having said that, I think it would be a cracking buy! It's just so so much purer and more focused than 99% of the 'sporty' hatchbacks/coupes available.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,396 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

    @Mr.David

I'm coming from motorbikes...try living with a sportsbike seating position in Dublin traffic on a daily basis/long journey!

But what you said is pretty much exactly why I like the Megane. Be different on the road (think i saw one on the m50 one morning before christmas)

    Gonna view this on Sat.

Won't be coming back with it (funds are prohibited at present) but I've a hard on for it.

Chatting to the owner and it's more liveable than the f1 as a daily.

    That's one beautiful RS Megane!

    Viewed the red 225 today.

One of the boardsie mechanics has worked on it actually!

Left deposit, all going well insurance wise during the week I'll be picking up next weekend.

Quiet and refined, comfy, and a fsh.

    Gorgeous bus. Nothing mad...bar a remap & exhaust = ~270bhp

That's some serious car. I always wanted one and hope to get one when I'm a bit older and have finished college and all. The colour really suits it too. Make sure to post up a few pictures when you get it. Well wear.

In case the insurance would go out the window anyway, and you wouldn`t mind japo interior, I`d defo chose an evo or sti any day. The available parts, tuning options, driveability, is truly unmatched.
