Wii U in 2014

I don't have a Wii U but I was tempted on a few occasions to pick one up last year but I resisted. I think that I might end up getting one this year but I'm not sure yet.

So far it really does seem that the Wii U is only going to be good for playing Nintendo first party titles. I really wanted to play New Super Mario Bros. U and Super Mario 3D World looks incredible. I know that Mario Kart 8 is coming this year but is there anything else to look forward to? (I'm not a Smash Bros. fan)

Also I am hopeful of a price cut this year. The question is how low will they go? I would at least like them to hit a price of €199 or take the Gamepad out of the box and make it optional to cut the price.

As an aside there is a great article on the Wii U over on Euro Gamer.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is coming sometime in Spring. After that, Mario Kart and SSMB we dont know much of whats being released, apart from Bayonetta 2 which might mkae it this year (possibly in the Autumn) and slim chance of X, but I would say its a 2015 release. 3rd party I think Watch Dogs is coming out on it, but also a drought of good titles there too.

Gonna be interesting to see what Nintendo announce at E3, since no big games lined up till after it as far as I can tell.

How exactly would this work? It is the standard controller for the machine and not having it would mean a lot/all games wouldn't work.

It is my understanding that the vast majority of games don't require it. ZombiU and the Nintendo Land game need it. But it seems that most games just use it for off tv play. Just bundle the console with the pro controller.

Really? I see it as a real option to reduce the price and gets some additional sales.

Even as a big Nintendo fan I don't see €299 as a good price. But as you say there is some value to be had in some shops. I remember Smyths had it for €229 with Zelda late last year.

You can definitely pick up a Wii-U for about 200 if you keep an eye on adverts.ie or gumtree.ie. I picked one up recently as I have had basically every other Nintendo console and Mario is amazing in HD. The visuals from the console in general is stunning and it does hold a lot of potential since in the past Nintendo games were more gameplay than looks (i.e Gamecube). Off screen play is so brilliant and basically not promoted by Nintendo. Its just great you can do everything on the gamepad form a lounger or your bed, when a TV isnt available. You can watch all the popular streaming services, browse the web, Skype, email etc. So I say keep an eye out for a cheap one. Smyths are doing WindWaker pack for 279.99 and frankly
if you have not played this before then its a steal and a great way to start. To me its one of the bet games ever made...

It would also fragment the user base and take away the innovative part of the console.

no the lowest the zelda console went to was 279 and the gas thing is nowhere had the console when the price drop of 20 euro happened clever smyths very very clever

Gamestop have a few zelda consoles for 299...

Might i add that the zelda console is gonna be uber collectable in years to come imo its the best value console on the market at 299

Taking the pad out of the package makes no sense in the long run - if nothing else you're removing the USP, and suddenly you have a console that can't compete wit hthe others on power or features, isn't getting a large chunk of the cross platform games, has very little 3rd party support and a fairly spartan 1st party release schedule.

With the pad, you still have those problems but you don't notice them because you're busy drawing pictures of Yoshi on MiiVerse while watching Great British Bakeoff with your significant other and pretending you care about croquant bouches.

They made the right choice of keeping the pad, dumping internal storage and unnecessary peripherals (pad charging stand, WiiMote sensor bar etc) for the basic pack.

I would have made great use of the pad charging stand, only for the fact that I really don't want to take the silicon cover off the pad... And it doesn't fit in with it on! Dilemmas!

Yeah you're right. I checked my post history as I remember making a post about it. But it was the fact that I had a voucher too that would have made it €229. I knew there was a reason I was thinking of that figure.

There is a Fire Emblem Shin Megami Tensai crossover rumored for the Wii U, not sure if we would see it this year though.
There also some sort of Zelda game to come out this year as well.

I'd love to see a F-Zero release for it, not going to see that though.

Oh man... what about F-Zelda : Termina Velocity where Link and Ganondorf race eachother on rocket powered horses? The rumour that I just made up suggests it's coming out on March 14th on the WiiU eShop to coincide with the last day of Cheltenham.

Nah won't be any use, the are using the controls from Kirby AirRide and you must have a gamecube controller to play it.
Smart from Nintendo though, requiring the use of the GC controller they should make a bomb selling through their old stock.

That Eurogamer article is about the development process BEFORE the console was released.
The problems are very common, it's just only Nintendo get these kind of articles written about them.

You into hack n slash big monster explosion games?
Wii U has Bayonetta 2 this year, and X probably next year or 2016.
If you're going to get 3DWorld get Sonic Lost World too, it's a great game.
The controls are the most like the mega drive games since Sega tried to go 3d.

Don't expect a price cut. I personally don't think that's the biggest problem, but maybe Nintendo do and will say something at e3.
Expect a model with Wii Sports Club in the box.
The Gamepad will never be removed from a Wii U box.

I now the suggestion of Nintendo removing the Gamepad has been rubbished in this thread but it strikes me that Nintendo aren't as sold on it as some people. If they were really truly committed to it then why is there no functionality for it in Donkey Kong and it is apparently only a horn in Mario Kart 8. Hardly inspirational use of the device.

But it has the potential to save marriages with Off TV play!!

Seriously though it really is useful when the missus wants to watch - insert rubbish show here - and all you to do is play Mario. It means she now thinks your a good boyfriend/husband by staying in the same room as her every now and then mumbling something at her to sound half interested in said show.

I would agree though on it not being used right outside of that though. The uses for it in lego city zooming in and out of random things was pointless. Kinda like the Vita, you either build a game around the technology like Little Big Planet or Tearaway or dont bother at all as it really just feels tacked on otherwise and is more annoying than interesting/engaging.

Personally though I couldnt care less what they do with the gamepad once they allow me to continue to play games Off TV.

I agree with you over off-TV play. I don't have a Wii U yet but being able to play it while the wife watches TV will be great. I already play the PS4 via the VITA extensively so I know how good the function is.

you'd think though with 8 or 9 years worth of DS and 3DS development behind them most developers would have some idea of how to use 2 screens and a touch interface effectively. Surprised they haven't revamped the Sin and Punishment games into a 2 pack with Kid Icarus Uprising style controls - which would work even better in off-play. You'd be screaming in frustration at the screen, and your wife could say "I know, I can't believe they tried to cook a soufflé in the final, EVERYone knows they collapse" and it brings you closer together...

Also doubt I'd be able to justify it to my wife, at least not until Mario Kart 8 comes out.

    For Wii U I have
    Pikmin 3 (8/10)
    Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (8/10
Nintendo Land (10/10) Bring friends/family for this one it soo much more fun with more people
    Sonic Lost World (6/10)
New Super Mario Bros U and Luigi U (7/10) Fun with friends but a bit of a mess if people just throw each other over the sides but provided a lot of laughs for us
    Zelda: Wind Waker HD (10/10)
    Super Mario 3D World (10/10)

And I plan to hopefully get
    The Wonderful 101 (Already out)
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (Tomorrow 21/2/2014)
    Mario Kart 8 (May)
    Smash Bros Wii U (2014)
Hyrule Warriors (Zelda game but not main series) (2014?)
    Yarn Yoshi (No Idea)
Sonic Boom (2014) (New Sonic Game)

Hope this helps on you deciding if you will get a Wii U or not, not sure what other games are coming out tho, Bayonetta but I may pass on that.

Picked up the premium console for €225 in smyths on Friday, also DK country for €45. Absolutely no regrets, nintendo land is excellent. A mate recommended Trine 2 on the e-shop, which is on sale for just over €8, downloading at this moment.
I feel it will be more like the GameCube days with this console, solid first party software, and a handful of 3rd party's. Which is fine by me.

If they want it to feel like the gamecube days, they need to release a Rogue Squadron and Viewtiful Joe game, and give me a full 16 uninterrupted hours of playing True Crime : Streets of LA - it's Dim Sum Time!

Unless you mean the bad old days of half a shelf down the back of Game or HMV. To be honest, those days are never coming back because I have a credit card and Amazon don't have shelves that I or anyone else can see. Internet shops : Dispelling shame for purveyors of Porn and Nintendo Software since 1995
