I would like to build a new PC for general home use with some occasional video/photo processing [Premier/Vegas & Photoshop] and maybe some light gaming. Intel/AMD CPU, I've no preference. I've been advised to avoid Asrock motherboards by an IT colleague. I have a HD 5770 graphics card available to use.

    1. What is your budget? [€500 to a max of €600]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [ Internet surfing/ General MS Office/ Occasional video/photo editing. Ripping my DVDs for back-up. Apologies Mods if I'm not allowed to mention ripping]

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [No]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [ Just the existing hard drives. I would like a new case with audio and usb connectors on the front or top and a suitable PSU too. Maybe 8 Gigs of RAM? My current PC will be passed on to the kids.

    5. Do you need a monitor? Not just at the moment, in six months from now I hope.
5a. If yes, what size do you need. 23/23 inch.

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] [I have a HD 5770 graphics card available.

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [DVD burner, Blu Ray drive and a Card Reader would be nice]

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [No]

    8. How can you pay? [Credit Card/Laser/bank transfer]

    9. When are you purchasing? [Jan/Feb '14]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [South Dublin City/Cork City/Kerry/etc.] N/A

An SSD might be included, but as I rarely power down my current PC it's not a show stopper.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Item|Price
    Intel Core i5-4440 Box, LGA1150|€157.42
    MSI H81M-E33 V2, mATX, Sockel 1150|€46.88
    be quiet! SYSTEM POWER 7 400W - bulk -|€40.67
    8GB-Kit Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 MHz CL9|€74.67
    BitFenix Merc Alpha|€33.02
    WD Blue 1TB 6Gb's|€51.31
Samsung SSD 840 EVO Basic 120GB SATA 6Gb/s|€84.99
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€507.95

5770 would be fine for light gaming with low to medium graphics at 1080P. If you wanted a bit more power graphics wise I could revise the build.

I'm sure someone will recommend a blue ray drive not up on them atall.

Not really the above is pretty well spot on I think, you could put together something based on the FX-8320, but if your not all that interested in overclocking it's not going to be any better than the above really.

It wouldn't really work out any cheaper either, as you'd to pair it with a more expensive board anyway.

    Thanks for the information.

At the risk of sounding ungrateful, could you suggest a different motherboard as the one suggested has only one PCI-E slot on it. Is that common? Might I need additional expansion slots got a firewire card etc?

maybe have a look at a B85 ATX board, its just the H81 chipset is pretty barebones, especially when combineed with being in the mATX form factor.

    Thanks Marco Polo.
Could I use a standard sized ATX board and not an mATX board? If so what would you suggest?
Referring to my first post 'I've been advised to avoid Asrock motherboards by an IT colleague.'

    Thanks.

The case is ATX so either mATX or ATX will fit, ATX usually will give you a few more ports/slots etc.

There's really no good reason to be avoiding ASRock nowadays, its certainly true they started out in 2002 as a manufacturer of crappy low end boards, but that is certainly no longer the case and hasn't been for a long time. They are now the third largest manufacturer in the world and you don't do that unless you are making decent quality stuff.

But really any reasonably priced B85 motherboard will do the job just fine once it has all the features you need, be it mATX or ATX.

There not much in stock of ATX B85 boards on HWVS at the moment though the closed priced alternative is this MSI, anything else in the €60 looks to bemATX.

    Thanks Marco Polo.
That motherboard looks good. Perhaps it's time for my IT colleague to update his opinion on Asrock motherboards.

Many of us here use them and they're regularly recommended for their lower pricepoint
