Op, you need to go to the careers service in your college. They will advise you on what you should do next.

You mentioned that 1st year has drained your confidence. Don't be so hard on yourself, the transition from second to third level education is huge. It takes time to adjust to college and you're still at a very early stage in your course. You seem sure that you want to leave your course. However, you should get in contact with your lecturers and explain that you are finding the course difficult.

The best thing you can do is talk to the careers service and your lecturers. Good luck.

Have a good chat with careers officer and see what other options are there for you with your present Leaving Cert. If not happy why not consider starting off again in September. (Loads of people do)
Have a good think about what you would like to do, see what subjects are required and go for it.

Once you have the decision made I think that a break away would be no harm. Forget about the college, Why not try and get a job in France, Germany and work on the language.
You are too young to allow yourself to be trapped in to a course and career that you do not want.
Remember it is your life not anyone else

What exactly is it that's wrong? Are you finding living away from home too difficult? The transition to third level? Or is the course itself just wrong for you? Do you think you will fail your exams?

Definitely talk to the careers advisor people. You need a Plan B or you'll find yourself next year twiddling your thumbs and no further along the line.

Are you studying in an area of interest (even if the course is hard)?

Have you looked into PLC courses locally? That might be a useful bridge for you between Leaving Cert and college? It wouldn't be a long commitment and would give you a qualification in 9 months to get on your cv and you could see where to go from there with the benefit of some extra maturing time and space.

If you pass the course for this year, would it give you an option to transfer into another course?

I'd advise talking to the college counsellor if you're feeling overwhelmed!
