Recommend obscure movies

I often think to recommend movies that mightn't be so widely known, in other threads, but thought it might be fun to have a thread to discuss these sorts of films.

Here's a list of a few of my favourite - lesser known - films:

    Cold Fever (JPN/US/Iceland)
    Dellamore Dellamorte (Dir cut) (Italy/Ger/UK/FR/US)
    Highway 61 (Canada)
Too Many Ways To Be No. 1 (HK)
    Romantic Dream (HK)
    Aachi & Ssipak (KOR)
    Gonin (JPN)

These are not my favourite films ever, though they're all very much worth a look. Saying that - Too Many Ways To Be No. 1 is def one of my favourite HK movies, and that's saying a lot, if you know me.

    What else??

The DVD label Second Run is great for overlooked stuff like this, some releases of which being the only known DVDs of said films.

I really loved: Blissfully Yours/Tropical Malady, Here Then, Daisies and Mundane History.

Not extremely obscure but very underrated: Midnight Run (1988)

    Very enjoyable action-comedy.

A lonely place to die (last 20 mins lets it down a bit)
    Transsiberian

2 reasonably decent thrillers that are relatively unknown.

If you want this thread to have any hope of living, you'll want to be providing reasons why you think the films you name are worth seeking out. Otherwise this'll get nuked as a list thread.

As far as "obscure" goes - I'm generally in favour of this sort of thread in that there's a bunch of stuff I find at random on Netflix that I really enjoy but would be very unlikely to find through normal channels.

For example, I regularly recommend that fans of psychological horror watch YellowBrickRoad - it has a (relatively) unknown cast, a strong script and a compelling premise - decades ago, the entire population of a remote US village disappeared overnight, seemingly setting off on a nearby trail; eventually the remains of the group were found, many having starved to death and others apparently having been brutally murdered. No explanation was ever found by the authorities investigating. When the details are finally declassified, a group of friends decide to follow the same trail and try to discover what happened. The script builds tension slowly, forsaking jump scares for an uneasy atmosphere and sinister undercurrent. The build up is worth it, though.

That was a great movie. Its seldom shown on tv now either. De Niro and the other lead worked well in it:-). There was one called A Simple Plan that was good.

Us Two (a Nous Deux) really interesting French on the run thriller involving Gangsters and cops. Fairly obscure.

Bad Company an odd western starring Jeff Bridges and which was the directing debut of Robert Benton who went on to win an Oscar for Kramer v Kramer.

    Paperhouse (1988)

Very underrated. Great young actors - Charlotte Burke & Elliott Spiers (sadly died very young).

Les Ripoux aka My New Partner (1984)

Damn funny French film. It's worth watching alone for the outstanding performance by the late Philippe Noiret.

The OP no longer has access here, so best to put this thread to bed.
