We have had a freeviewbox HD8300 for about 6 months now. Some while back some channels starting disappearing but we didn't take too much notice as they were kind of mickey mouse channels that we never watched. Now all the Irish stations and all radio stations have gone.Is it posible that it might be from the satellie dish being moved by the recent bad weather or will the box need retuning? The latter is not exactly clearly explained in the instruction booklet.Any advice or anyone else who has this box and experienced similar problems?

I'm not familiar with this model but if it is Freeview as you say it needs an aerial not a satellite dish.
Do NOT retune. Find the fault. Retuning will delete everything and make fault finding virtually impossible.

Is it one of these? A satellite-only box? And you had the Irish channels? What other non-"Mickey Mouse" channels did you lose?

Freeview is the UK terrestrial broadcast service, BTW, not widely available outside NI.

Yes thats it.Satelite only. There are in theory about 99 channels available with it some of the channels that have disappeared along with RTE/TG4/TV3 are The Horror Channel, Movies For Men and some of the music channels. So its not freeview? That'll tell you how tech savy I am.Don't tell me I've been sold some useless piece of crap

Freeview is actually a brand name, as is Freesat.

What you have is a satellite receiver capable of receiving free-to-air programmes, as well as some subscription stuff, given the right viewing card.

If you were receiving TV3, only available on satellite with a Sky subscription, & you had it as part of a "freeview" package, then there is something fishy going on.

Are you sure you were getting Irish channels on this?
What non mickeymouse channels are you getting? These answers might help to decide if your box is dodgy or not.
It may be that the channels you think are missing may have just moved and tuning is needed. This shouldn't delete existing channels if you just do a rescan.

When you go to Rte/tv3/tg4 does the epg say a rescan is required? That would mean your getting the channels by saorview with an Arial.

Yes the Irish channels are deffo on it,they were first in the list from one up to 99.Some of the other channels to have disappeared are Movies 4 Men The Horror Channel and some music channels.Just flicked through all 99 channels and the ones that have disappeared deffo haven't been moved. When you go onto the lost channels the screen is black with a little blue box in the center of the screen that says "No Signal".

Can you post the exact make & model of the box that you have? The manual might be written & titled for a 'family' of receivers.

That's a satellite/terrestrial combi receiver. The manual has all the tuning information under 'installation'.

Those 'Mickey Mouse' satellite channels tend to be moved to different frequencies from time to time & that box will need you to carry out a retune to get them back. Genuine Freesat branded boxes do this automatically but, are not available as combis.

If all your Irish channels have gone missing, that would point to trouble with the terrestrial aerial setup that delivers the Saorview signal.

Ok,I'll look into that thanks for the info.

Nothing dodgy then; just the ravages of the weather, combined with typical satellite frequency changes.

That's a decent receiver, but they're typically used & R&D in countries where satellite & cable have have won (against terrestrial*), & people are more used to dealing with it.

*Are ourselves & the UK only users by choice? I think it suits some northern/mountainy places over satellite? Surely the mobile argument has been won by the, erm, mobile providers?

Just about all countries have terrestrial networks. Generally it is free to air and can be connected to all TVs in the house. Satellite/cable on the other hand is generally pay and only connects to one set unless extra boxes and wiring is put in. Holland, Belguim, and Germany are extensively cabled but they are the exception.
