Everyone is different but try 4thelads.ie.
Usually cheapest for young drivers or try FBD - more keen to insure bigger engines.

For a 17 year old on their 1st car its not really.

As a first car at 17 it isn't!

It's car insurance, every company charges different for every driver. Liberty are the cheapest for me, but the most expensive for others. First ireland are the cheapest for others, while the most expensive for me.
My advice would be to whip out the phone book and ring every broker and insurer and ask for a quote.

How much are you expecting to pay OP? 1400 sounds like a bargain in your case.

My first policy at 23 on a learner permit, in a 1.2 l car was €1800.

Sounds like you have a decent offer at €1400, especially on a 1.6 and your age.

There is no one company that is the best to get insured from, you'll get different quotes from everyone, therefore, you must call everyone.

Te car is only worth like 500 ATM,have to do a lot of jobs to it too so I don't even know if it's worth keeping by the time I get around to insuring it?

    That is your choice.

Ring them up and ask for a quote for a learner drive aged 17 and no experience. Then get the vaseline ready.

It might be worth your while on making a list of stuff that has to be done to make it roadworthy again and post it up here. Because if it's spending as little money as possible is your plan, fixing a car up isn't the way to do it.

That's not a bad price at all considering your circumstances. Your very lucky your not being quoted double that if I'm honest.

Chris I paid 2500 pounds at 27 with my brother at 20 on a 1.2 punto so that quote is a steal.

OP, you really went about this the wrong way.

You should have seen roughly how much insurance was going cost you before buying the car. The value of the car really has very little bearing on the cost of insurance. You are not just paying insurance to replace a €500 car. You are insuring yourself against causing damage and potential injury to yourself or others, this is what insurance are basing their quotes on. A €500 car can cause as much damage or carnage as a €100k Merc. Personally I think you will do well to beat €1400 considering your age and experience.

I'll get the car checked over during the week and post a list of what has to be done and let ye know.. Thanks again lads

Even being over a decade older, my wife and I recently getting our first car found insurance was >€1000 as our previous named driver experience was too long ago/not continuous cover (even after years of driving experience in my wife's case). So essentially we're considered as zero years driving experience. As you're not only in the same boat, but will be insured as a 17 yr old, it does sound like a bargain!

I know someone who paid €2500 on their first insurance! (Similar story, they'd only summers etc. insured on parents car, and they were a lot younger).

If you can hold off a year driving your own car, it may bring the cost down to get a year's insurance as named driver on your parents insurance.

surely you should have got insurance quotes before you bought the car.

Any reason why you need 1.6 ltr engine. Surely 1 or 1.2 would be better for someone your age.

Insurance for someone like yourself is going to be expensive. It's all got to do with risk profile. Your young, inexperienced and liable to speed, a higher risk to be involved in an accident and be complacent.

You're insurance will drop provided you can show your a safe driver.

The is from a UK site but the stats would be comparable to Ireland.

OP I paid €1,000 Third Party on a 12 year old 1.0 Seat Ibiza for my first car when I was 24. As many others have been saying, your quote seems pretty reasonable for a 1.6L. The fact that its an Audi A4 and not something they'd consider more sensible like an Avensis or something along those lines probably doesn't help the cause.

I know if I was in your shoes turning 17 with an Audi sitting outside, I wouldn't want to contemplate flogging it and buying a Fiesta or a Polo but if you can't afford the higher insurance, then this might be your best option for now, and while it gets you from A to B, you can be looking forward to treating yourself to something a bit flashier in a couple of years when you have a bit more money coming in.
