blocking google ads from the results.

When I do a search on particular items I am finding that nearly all of the top results (I have 10 results to a page) are clearly based on my location or on something that Google thinks applies to me.

How can I have it that the results I get are simply related to the particular search term I have entered?

When I check out "ad settings" in Google it informs me that if I "opt out" I will still get ads but they will be of less relevance to me "as they see it" but that I will still get ads.

My complaint is that the ads are very difficult to differentiate from the "non ads" as they are very lightly highlighted in pale yellow and ,if I do make the conscious effort to navigate below these then the following results look suspicious also (businesses in my locality etc etc)

Can I just remove all these ads from the search results (I don't mind so much about individual websites as I can just ignore them if I think their site is full of ads)

I did see a program called Adblocker but even that is on the Google Chrome site so even that makes me suspicious.

Will I have to use a different search engine completely ?Any suggestions?

Don't search while your logged into your google account that's it google are just taking advantage of your data and serving you up what they think is relevent to you. I use "thor" it's a plugin for firefox I don't like the thought of google tracking everything I do online but that's just me. Hope this helps.

    thanks.
Yes I heard that before. But if I sign out of Google I still get the same results.
Does it take a reboot of the computer to take effect or do you have to wait days for Google to acknowledge you are no longer signed in?

Are there any search engines that give results purely based on relevance to the query per se and which serve up the same results to everyone wherever they are in the world and whatever their search "history" ?

I am not sure that I follow your here, are you talking about paid adverts or about the main text Serach Engine Results Pages?

I have a product that is very niche for a very specialist marketplace. if I Google search that, the results are mostly US as most of the players are US based... however I come out ranking Numbers 1,2 and 3!! My site is poorish but my domain name is 100% on the money! Try Googleing "95Kpa bags".

    Cheers

It is both. But my main gripe is the search results per se.

I just feel that if I make a search query then I would appreciate getting results that conform to the actual query and not to what the search engine thinks I would like to see.
I am quite capable of refining my search if I have to .

As to the ads that crop up at the top of the page I find these are deliberately coloured (highlighted in the background) so as to confuse and invite you to click on them under the misapprehension that they are "genuine" search results .

There is a third (are there more?) category where individual sites agree to have advertising on their page.In my eyes this devalues the first impression of their website but it is not really my concern and I am quite happy with this form of advertising .

But if the search engine results themselvesare full of advertising I want them to be clearly visible and not to "blend in " with the other results .

Are there better search engines than Google in this regard?

I was looking into some of those search engines and I think that is what I will do.

Extremely simple solution OP - ad blocker for Chrome (and / or other browsers).

Blocks all ads. Not made by Google!!

You come out 1,2,3 on google.ie because Google detects the searcher is in Ireland and that the company is in Ireland, so it feels it is serving more relevant information to the searcher.

You are number 3 on google.com with american companies taking the top slot.

this is what's happening to the OP as well, they're using the .ie domain i presume

    OP
you can stop google redirecting you to your local domain by setting your default search engine to www.google.com/ncr
or else just search google.com and then search from it whenever you don't want the local stuff

Of course you are right, and, to be honerst, I am happy to be there at all on page 1!! . Also when I search in the UK on a local computer, it still comes up No1. The commercial bottom line is that the other manufacturers have exclusive deals with the distributors that also feature in the results, even with our crappy site, we pick up the rest of the dealer enquiries. We are generally not looking for end user orders but rather from European distributors.
Clearly it is not a situation that would suit everybody, but it works for our application.

    Cheers
