Our club is a having a "light-hearted competition" tomorrow

Have to play 9 hole comp with any 2 clubs and a putter.

    What clubs would you pick?

Hybrid(21 degrees) and 50 degree wedge. Would be quite a fun thing to do. I think you would need a wedge of some sort in case you get stuck in a bunker.

    5/6 iron, 9 iron & putter.

    6i, 9i and a putter.

For a laugh we played a par 4 with only a PW one day and came in two over. The not so funny thing is I had plenty of trebles on the same hole with all my clubs lol

    6i, PW

I'm Amazed at the number of votes for the driver. Have any of you guys actually used an iron instead of driver?

you'd need something that can give a bit of distance off the tee and something that can hit greens aswell as being useful for most types of chips. I'd say i'd go with my 22 degree rescue and my 9 iron. Even a long par 4 a pair of well struck rescues wouldn't be far away from the green

As an aside I saw Bubba Watson recently shot 81 with just 1 club (a rescue I think). Stuff like that really shows how good those guys are, I mean if I'm having a bad day I could end up shooting an 81 or maybe worse and that's with all 14 clubs!

Depends on the course/tees but without any wood you could be turning most of the par 4s into par 5s. Also if you only hit driver 200-220 then it makes sense not to bring it but anyone hitting it 250+ might be better off with it. I'm more amazed by the people picking 6 iron + 9 iron or 4 iron + 8 iron!

My old pro back in the UK used to get us to go out with 1 club & a putter. Then the next practice day, pick another club & so on.
You really discovered how to manipulate clubs to manufacturer a shot.
3 iron out of a green side bunker wasn't pretty though!

I think it's more that the result if you bring driver is that you can probably only use it 14 tines in total in a round, as for every other shot you'll have to use whatever iron you bring.

If you bring a 5 iron or a 4/hybrid as your long club it gives significantly more options for your round.

Chances are if you hit 250+yd drives, then you're hitting a hybrid around 200 yrds, & you can use that hybrid from the rough & fairway a lot easier than a driver.

Only way a driver makes any sense to me is if it's a 3 club comp & you're doubling up your driver as a putter

    5 iron and an umbrella

The odd 3 putt with the driver would probably bring average drive stats under 275 yards ;):)

For me it would be my 2 hybrid and PW

Played in a 6 club challenge at the weekend.

    Driver, 22 Rescue, 6I, 8I, PW, Putter

    Barely used the 8 iron.

The first two holes were Par3, Par 5. Two bogies, 10 shots, as follows:

    1 x Driver
    2 x 6 Iron
    1 x Rescue
    1 x PW
    5 x Putt

Just goes to show where all the shots go......

The only club I missed at all was the 56 degree wedge.

For the OP, I'd use 22 degree rescue, PW, putter.
