Just wondering is there a major difference between tyres for a road bike for the likes of speed, handling etc. and if so which are the best

I can only comment on the tyres I've used.

    Schwalbe Lugano
    Vitoria Rubino Pro Slick
    Vitoria Zaffiro.

In terms of grip the Luganos are the best with the Zaffiros next followed by the Rubinos. The Rubinos are the fastest with Zaffiros a very close second and the Zaffiros are the most comfortable (possibly because they're a wired tyre and the others are folding type.)

All of them are pretty good in terms of puncture resistance with the Luganos being the best.

I have the Zaffiros on my winter bike and the Rubinos on my good bike. The zaffiros are well worn and I plan on replacing them with Vitoria Rubino Pros when the time comes (I think)

Another tyre that tends to review well is the Continental GP4000S.
After reading lots of reviews noline and chatting with a few triathlete and road cyclists I got a pair of these tyres for my road bike in the 23mm size, and I cannot fault them. Grippy, fast-rolling, and they appear to be wearing very well at this stage. I had 19mm Vittoria Rubino in 19mm on the bike when I got it but I found the Vittoria to be poor enough on grip and undersized for my bodyweight.

Wiggle usually has them at a reduced price.

Are wired tyres more comfortable than folding?

Shouldn't make any real difference. Any differences are outside of the bead as the bead type doesn't (shouldn't anyway) affect how the sidewall deforms under loads.

I've had wire and kevlar versions of the same mountain bike tyre (Maxxis ADvantage) and there's been no appreciable difference outside of a few grams lighter for the kevlar bead, but you'd be hard pressed to notice any rolling difference. They felt the same over obstacles and under side load. I only changed to the kevlar beaded tyres as I wanted to be able to bring a spare tyre with me in my backpack, and only a folding one would work. I would presume the same behaviours would apply to road tyres.

I can notice a difference, maybe it's down to their weight as they're quite a bit heavier but they just seem more solid and comfortable on the road than folding tyres.

    +1
I've been using these for the past 3 yrs, grip is superb and while I still get the odd puncture I reckon these are fairly bombproof as well.

I've just put a set of these on my road bike and quite happy with them so far as I've only got to use them in the wet and they've given plenty of grip. Got the pair of them on offer too from crc for €18!!
