An Post returning something to Amazon without me knowing

I don't do much online shopping, just wondering if this is standard.

I purchased something from Amazon.co.uk on the 30th of December. I got an email from Amazon this morning saying my purchase has been successfully returned. I'm still waiting for it so this is news to me. So it turns out it was damaged and An Post returned it.

Should I not have been notified of this sometime before?

It's a big inconvenience because I've to wait about five days for the refund to go through to my account before I'll have the money to repurchase the items. Then wait another while for delivery. I find Amazon's free delivery to be appalling.

Is it worth kicking up a fuss or is this just what happens from time to time?

How did you find out it was damaged and returned by anpost?
It's worth contacting anpost and having it noted that you were never told. Amazon have pretty good customer service. You could try live chat, and see if they would be able to avoid a refund and just send a replacement. It may be too late for this if they've already issued a refund, so just be careful that you don't end up with a second charge while your waiting for the first refund.
As far as free delivery goes, it's identical to paid delivery but free. Unless you want to pay a premium for express services.

    Thanks.

I've been in contact with Amazon and they said it was returned by An Post and was damaged in transit.

Amazon said they can't resend orders that are returned like this and I'll have to purchase them like normal again.

I got two emails at the same time, one saying they received my return and another saying my card will be refunded. That's the worst part, the refund just went through immediately and there was no way to stop it.

Sounds like it was just damaged in transit (i.e. someone dropped the box, or damaged the item in some way). Rather than deliver it to you, I'd assume it's An Post/Amazon policy to return and refund regardless, as that's why you as the customer would have done anyway.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was some kind of 'score' being kept by Amazon of the delivery services with the most 'damaged in transit' items, it would likely push the top contenders down Amazons preferred supplier list.

Still a pain when you only found out by receiving the "successful return" email

Try contacting Amazon again on the chat and ask if you place the order again can they upgrade the sipping to faster delivery for free, you should be able to get it as it wasn't your fault.

I contacted them in the past before to merge 2 orders to get free shipping but they decided to give me faster shipping via UPS and refund on the shipping charges.
