my partner is working for a large irish chain of supermarkets in ireland. She was interested in doing a course which would enhance her skills at what she does now. She approached her manager and said it to her/him and there was no problem ,she was just told to bring in a letter detailing it. One week before the course she has been told she cant go it is against company policy. The course is only for 6 evening over a 6 week period, im furious and am thinking of asking her to leave. The other thing would be to go to a area manager or higher about this, but as I know the managers working with her will resent her for this. The annoying part is she is very flexible for example today she was due to work at 10am and they asked yesterday would she come in at 8am and she did.
    any advice appreciated

What reasons were given for her not being allowed to do it? Was she told why it is "against company policy"?

She should go and inquire to the specifics. The company should have a handbook with policies.

Just find it unusual if she is going to further herself at her job that they would deny it. If it's for a good reason, it is fair enough but I've only heard of people being encouraged to progress.

Yes its sad, just looking for a different job now. She was never late or sick in 2 years and always
    Flexible.

could she book annual leave for each of the six days of the course?

If this supermarket starts with D, it's not in the handbook and should be challenged. The handbook forbids having any commercial interests outside work like owning a shop and also forbids working for a competitor or supplier without permission. No mention of anything else.
