Factory agents fee

    Just curious, does anyone know what meat factories pay their agents for sourcing cattle for them?

    SFA, and they do all the dirty work for the factories:confused:. Some make a few quid as they also haul the cattle so the commission on top is a help. Agent would want to be buying over a hundred at least a week to have anything, probably two to have a decent wage from it.

    That's no good as most killing numbers go direct and smaller no.s are a wast of time when you call and look at them first and most of these guys are still living 30 yrs ago haggling over price insisting that they don't need qa etc and it completely his fault if the animals die bad etc
    But after saying that a good agent is worth a lot to those guys for advice and guidance even if they don't take it
    I kill all through an agent now long story but I'm happy with arrangement
    I haul myself he claims nothing out of it but it keeps his lorry on the road and he get to buy cattle back for a lot of the clients

    Lad I use just makes part of a living as most do. He farms a bit as well. Very few big finishers use an agent so no agent will have one of them.

    The way it works as far as I can see is they get around 5/head to source cattle My lad usually get to send in a two double's of cattle a week(50-60). At 5/head he makes 250-300/week. He hauls also as he is local it costs me about 7-8/head. He sources a few cattle for farmers as well I think he charges 10-15 but not sure) depending on animal and distance.     A good agent to any small finisher is a must no point trying to deal with a procurement manager direct. You still need to source someone to haul. Have had agents that do not haul. At present have a bunch of dairy bred bulls to go he thinks he will get them away in a week. If dealing with factory procurement manager might have lost the rag by now. Have made enquiry's elsewhere but it seem only the Factory's you sold bulls before to are going to take them. As Eoin Liston said after Kerry lost the 87' Munster football final ''the circus is over time to take the tend down and move on''.

    Biggest issue with an agent is that you can trust him. You do not want a fella that will try to buy you cattle for himself on the other hand if he tell you they are not factory ready and you cannot hold what do you do with them.
