Battery problems

Hi there, I am having problems with my bike battery and would appreciate any insight... Today I tested the battery voltage and it was at 12.7 volts standing, when I started the bike it dropped to between 9 -10 volts which I think is ok, while idling though it was a bit high at around 17v ..... I checked the drain on the battery while the bike was off and it was 1.1ma which I think is ok. The problem is, I went for a short spin this evening and parked the bike, when I got back to the bike it barely started and after a few minutes the lowbeam bulb blew so I pulled over to check it and knocked off the bike... (Stupidly) then the damn thing wouldn't start... Eventually I bump started it and on the way home the high beam bulb blew, any ideas what could cause this?

Are you sure that the 17volts is ok. If it were a car, the battery would be starting to cook at that voltage. Blowing bulbs would be one symptom of overcharging.

The charging system voltage should never exceed 15V at any revs (14.5V is usually where the regulator kicks in and you'll need a few thousand revs to reach that, idling voltage is usually no more than 13) so your rectifier/regulator is fooked.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Cheers lads, yeah i think the regulator is done alright... seems that the gsxr's have a problem with the regulator /rectifier's and the generators so I guess i've a few things to test tomorrow, battery, fuses, rectifier and stator(generator) thankfully the manual is really detailed! does anyone know a good supplier for these types of components (other than ebay / amazon)?

^ Thread about upgrading Triumphs with an R1 MOSFET rec-reg. The MOSFET rec-regs run much cooler and seem to be a lot more reliable.

In principle it's the same for any bike.

If nothing else, it tells you how to give your R/R and stator a good going over with the multimeter :)

That's a great thread and a great mod. I have it all to do on the Mille.

    Quick update.

So I managed to get to the couplers for the rectifier (a bit trickier than i thought )and i tested the terminals as per the manual and as we thought, yep the rectifier is shot... I hope this Is not due to a faulty power generator though. Will see if i can do some tests on that too, maybe tomorrow. I read somewhere that suzuki done a recall on the dodgy rectifier/regulator that came stock with the bike, not sure if this is true or not I should know for sure by tuesday, anybody heard of a recall for these?
