Hi, I have been considering St. Pats in Thurles for a teaching degree in Irish and Business. As it is something I will probably do anyway, it's aswell to do it in a year less. Just wondering is anyone else considering it or is there anyone who has been and would let me know a little bit more about the college and the town itself. Internet is quite limited in it's info.

    Thanks

To be honest, it doesn't matter what college you would go to, even subbing or a few hours is in huge demand and there are hundred and hundreds of experienced teachers with little or no work.

I hadn't heard of any teaching qualifications available in Thurles. Is it a full degree including the DIP?

I heard recently that they aren't going to be taking any more students? Maybe that's a couple of years down the line though - no harm to check!

We have had a few students do TP with us over the years from Thurles and all seem happy with the course....Thurles itself isn't a very big town so the social life wont be like you would get in a city but the upside is that accommodation would be easier and cheaper to get. In fairness its a teaching degree with Dip included (from UL I think).
So if you want it then its as good as any other course, but as another poster said above there are practically no teaching jobs and there probably wont be for years to come as there are loads of qualified teachers looking for jobs. On the upside Irish does appear to be a good subject when looking for jobs...but make sure your oral skill are top notch to impress at interviews !!

I dropped out of the BBS degree in UL after one semester because the course didn't suit me with the large class sizes etc :o Just wondering does anyone know what is the average intake of students in st pats?? I would be looking at business and accounting teaching :D

I think each course takes in about 20 students. I emailed the college there during the week

lads the courses are great with the dip included and the points arent too high either... its a nice college , a lot smaller than most 3rd levels but you get to know everyone ... the town is a good size, the college itself is just a minute or two off the square
