Think it's a lot more basic and agricultural vehicle than the Vectra for a start.

Sell the Vectra privately and then buy the Vitara if you must. Other than that I cannot think of one reason to swap one for the other.

if you must have a jeep a rav4 or a crv would be a much better bet imo

Agree, you'd have to go back to the mid-90s to when the Vitara was top of it's class. The RAV4 put pay to that.
CRV would be my choice too, if you can afford the model form 07 onwards especially, great vehicle those.

The tax on those would be too high for me to be honest

That generation Grand Vitara are very unreliable, there are far better options out there imo.

RAV4 diesel is 2.0 litre, Vitara would be 1.9/2.0 litre. Going back a year means you will be paying motor tax based on engine size and most SUVs have similar size engines. Being honest, if you are not happy paying a bit more in tax then you are probably best keeping what you have as you will not be happy with the higher fuel consumption from a SUV either.

    The rav4 is 2.2d4d.

They were also available in 2.0d, maybe not 2007 though.

There are a few 2006 2.0d-4d models knocking around.

No idea, I'm sure there was an overlap between new and older model back then.

Maybe your right. If there is a 2.0d4d it's rare though. :)
