Weekend Skiing in Austria (from Munich) - which resort?

    Hi
So I have booked flights to Munich for the 2nd weekend in Feb and was wondering what resort you would recommend for 2 snowboarders (1 week each).

Must be easy to reach via trains / buses and must be suitable for beginner snowboarders.

So far I have been looking at Zell am See or Soll but would appreciate other options or opinions on these 2 resorts.

    many thanks :-)

Mayrhofen. Great resort with lots of runs. Slightly higher than Soll too. We arrange our own transfer but it can be done by train too.

Thanks - I was in Mayrhofen years ago in the summer and it was lovely. Will look into as well.

Fattes I'm in Kaltenbach today and was thinking of hitting mayer tomorrow, any tips on what way to approach resort in terms of skiing it in a loop, parking, where best runs are etc, hard to make sense of piste map

Op one boarder in our group and i'll see how he gets on tomorrow. The general area is good, various resorts with two days worth of skiing but austria has worst snow in Europe at moment (we'll versus France and italy anyway)

I don't think Zell am See would be ideal for a beginner snowboarder. The learners area is tiny and away from the main ski area, and most of the slopes going back into the town from the main ski area would be difficult for anyone starting out - there's a series of narrow lanes that you need to board down to get down to the village, they're so flat and narrow it's almost impossible to ride in a conventional style (on an edge) you almost have to ride the board flat, and that means little or no control, those lanes have an almost vertical 20' drop down to woods so it's not really somewhere you want to go off piste! Also, the final slope is either a black or a red, can't remember. You could take the gondola from about half way down, right down to the village, but you still have to make it half way down.

Save Zell for a later date, there's an amazing series of reds that run along the spine of the mountain, the whole way from the top, right down to a car park at the very bottom, takes about twenty minutes full on, great fun.

I will definitely look into Mayrhofen instead of Zell.

What about Soll? Any experiences from there.

In the morning get over to 27 red as quickly as possible tons if options including easy blues to get there ski the side for a bit and work you way back tin the board park over towards finkenberg after lunch and then back towards the penken

Snow is ****e everywhere below 1,500-2,000 except Italy but weather looks like it's changing in the 4 valley's Switzerland this weekend for a few races will let people know how the snow is

Niederau / Oberau 1hr 15mins train Munich to Worgl then a 10 min taxi to Niederau (about 15 euro). Village atmosphere, not as lively as other places but the pass covers Niederau, Oberau, Auffach and Aplbach which is not a bad bit of coverage but can be bumpy.

Another vote for Mayrhofen from me. Flew into Munich on one occasion and then train to mayrhofen. 2 change overs, 1 in Munich another in Jenbach. I've been a couple of times and wouldn't hesitate going again, lots of options in the whole zillertal valley with other resorts that can be reached easily by the local train. Also you've got the Hintertux glacier if the snow isn't great lower down.

What days are you flying? Depending on numbers and how many days you plan being in resort but it might be better to organise a private transfer and split the costs.

Mayrhofen or Kitzbuhel would get my vote.
You can get a train from the airport straight to the resort, the traing to Kitzbuhel actually arrives at the end of the Hahnenkamm, just dont go there on the weekend of the Jan 25 as the mens downhill is in Kitzbuhel that weekend.

Snow in 4 valleys just as everywhere else super above 1,400 but artificial
    Soft and crap below it

Skied mayrhofen today and really impressed, good steep pistes great lift system and well marked pistes etc, went to the town afterwards for a drink quite nice also by ski resort standards.

Glad you liked it, nice varied area that beginners can get across plenty of challenging reds and blacks? Some super cruise terrain and 3 great off piste areas!!

Spent the day slalom, racing like a pollock but finished 2nd so whoo

Mayrhofen without a doubt. Great skiing and great partying in equal measure!
