OK...first off... this isnt a thread to split the forum, we're all human at the end of the day I.e. Roy Keane has both good and bad qualities...

So.. just a simple poll to get a sense of what's going on..no need to lambast each other for their choice...actually the vote is private anyhow so if you want to 'come out' with your choice below then by all means feel free..but keep it brief..

What say you as regard doing the S&S? 41 votes

I could do with the extra few bob my own wages. So I'm Sparticus for that reason only.

Also in. Have no choice but most of my staff look like they are in, S&S is more of an inconvenience than a problem in my current school. I still get lots of work done during supervision-students pretty much just study quietly or do their homework. I hope I keep my hours next year or move to another quiet school!

Really depend on the school you are in. I'm in a disadvantaged school where the kids are very rowdy so I'm out. Its hassle and mega stress.

My partner is in a private girls school where is S&S is quite easy.

    Strongly leaning towards opting out.

I'm in a disadvantaged school with 570+ students.
We are being called 3 times per week on average for substitution.
This consists of crowd control mostly and more paper-work/follow-up.
    I am exhausted.

I am also taking into account the fact that at any time, changes can be made to the S+S scheme with hours increased in the next few years. Watch this space!

I can't see myself having the energy to patrol the corridors and "crowd control" classes for the next 20+ years.
My sanity/work-life balance and morale is worth more to me.

I'm in. No choice unfortunately. As a music teacher my spare time is absolutely crucial between choirs/practicals/practises.

I'm being forced into it, obviously. Much as I'd like to refuse and take a more obvious pay cut than the one currently being imposed to make a point, I doubt anyone would care so I'm forced to comply to maintain my salary.

Just to be clear, it's the government forcing me to comply, not anyone else.

Im in...not in a position to opt out so I cant decide, I think if I actually had the choice though I would opt out. In fairness S&S is easy in my school...but I like everyone I need the free classes to photocopy etc

Out.....no money would pay me to do it, knowing my free classes/breaks are my own is important to me. A someone else said, the Govt has free rein now to change whatever they want about S&S.

Out,thank god!! No money would pay me to do it either. gaeilgebeo above has said exactly what I would say. Because it's such mega stress in my school, a good 50% are already out and the majority,it appear, intend to stay out.

What's becoming apparent is the discriminatory nature of this.In some schools S&S isn't that bad so it's a feasible option for teachers who want to keep all their wages. In others,it's the fine line between sanity and insanity, so teachers have no choice but to pay up their 1.7K.

    I'm out.

I chose not to do s and s pensionably 10 years ago because I did not want to have to commit to it every year for 40 years. I've done it every year so far, but I still don't believe I want to sign up to it every year for the next 30 years.

It's the all or nothing thing that bothers me.

I think you've hit on something here...the ' quiet' schools aren't too badly off relative to the 'tougher' schools. It would appear that this is creating an impossible atmosphere to work in for some teachers...especially if very few teachers in these schools are doing the sand s... The divide between schools in Ireland will get greater.. I know it's generalising a bit...but things seem to be at a tipping point and once morale in a staffroom goes then the school sense of community takes a nosedive...
Ghettoisation... Ruari Quinn social justice labour party.. Mutually exclusive terms now.thanks a bunch Ruari

Still undecided but luckily I have the option to opt out. When does the decision have to be made by?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭Moody_mona

Might have better to include "opting in" and "forced in" in the poll, it's mad that a simple decision last year is unknowingly deciding the fate of your free classes for the rest of your teaching career. As you can gather, I'm in by default. S&S is a mixed bag in my school, I reckon during half of my substitutions I'll be able to get my own work done so I'll just have to settle for that.

I am out. Though I did it pensionably for about 6 years, I got sick of being caught continuously for supervision while the people opposite me on the rota were never called and so I opted out 3 years ago. The choice to opt out certainly should have been made available to everyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,963 ✭✭✭Meangadh

I'm in but it's actually ok in my school, I do get stuff done. It's more annoying than anything else, and the lunchtime supervision is a bore but it's grand.

I'm still angry about it though- it's absolutely scandalous the way the whole thing is being handled. In what other job would you have to pay NOT to do overtime? If I was in a really tough school I wouldn't be doing it. I used to be in schools like that and you couldn't pay me enough to spend more time in the classroom with certain students.
