is it possible to buy a freesat box and hook it up to the existing Sky satellite cabling and work, also would you be able to get one that will have an epg to work with it?

Any satellite receiver will work with the Sky dish & cables.

A genuine Freesat branded box will have a proper EPG.

You won't get the Irish channels with a Freesat box & Sky dish though.

The Humax Freesat+ receivers are highly regarded by all but don't rule out the cheaper boxes like Manhattan for example which can be cheaper. My brother has an EchoStar Freesat+ box and is very happy with it.

See a list of Freesat receivers here http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/ (rh column) and here http://www.freesat.co.uk/get-freesat/recommended/freesat-plus

Saorview requires a different box and an aerial, not possible to record Saorview channels on a Freesat box. The Walker WP6500TTR-HD (http://www.walker.ie/products/WP6500TTR-HD.html) is the only Saorview approved PVR on the market.
