Prepaid SIMs while on holidays in France

Can anyone recommend a good prepaid SIM service for France? With emphasis on data allowance and a good reception in the Alps?

As much as I'd love to leave my phone behind me I do need it to receive emails 24/7 :(

These clowns look OK, has anyone used them?

We've tried this and it's really not easy. The mobile data situation in France is ridiculous. We tried to get a dongle, but the costs were astronomical.
You know how the French love their paperwork! Well, you might spend a whole day just trying to get a sim in a shop.

Depending on which carrier you're with here, you might be able to get a better data & roaming bundle before you go away.
    Some info here: http://bhoatholidays.com/2013/01/06/experience-on-3g-data-wifi-prepaid-sim-in-france/

I'd say change your mail to 'fetch' and just take a quick look every time you stop for a drink - usually wifi in most places. Or you could use data if you're stuck. Mails aren't data-heavy so you'd be hard pushed to go over any add-on allowance you've bought here. That is, unless you can't help uploading smug selfies of yourself in the Alps!

Sorry Cormee no real easy way to do it!! WIFI in accommodation or your nearest Mcdonalds!!

As above you would probably be better off sorting something here before you go

I kind of have to be constantly connected to email and www so that wouldn't work. I had Vodafone Passport previously, which was great, but I'm with a different carrier now. I'll probably just buy that SIM card that I posted in the OP, it's worth a try at lease.

Ring up who ever your carrier is now and explain the situation. They'll probably sell you an amount of data for what ever amount.

o2 sorted me out prev when I was in New Zealand for a few weeks.

I was in France in the summer and we bought a prepaid dongle from Orange. It's a little device that you can connect up to 5 devices to wirelessly. Speeds were pretty good even around the alps once you were close to a town. We bought a €25 top up and that lasts for a month with more than enough data.
I think the dongle may have been around €80, pricey but we planned to use it again this year.
