Yes, the Indo had an article on it today:
    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/higher-chance-to-see-aurora-borealis-from-ireland-tonight-29902160.html

Its due to a solar flare on tuesday. Its a good clear evening so far so I am ready to check North between 9pm and 1am!

Cheers for the link. Think I'll get my camera and head out so. I'm in North County Dublin so hopefully head to a coastline and avoid some of the light pollution.

Where will you go? We'd like to go somewhere like Howth but we know nothing about astronomy so would love to join a group!

Am i right in saying the light pollution of Dublin city would rule out any chance of seeing it here?

Any opinions if it be viable in North Meath? Never got to see them before. Was thinking of heading out in to the dark countryside for a look

Any tips on where to go North of Dublin city to get dark skies?

I wish I was in my sweet sweet home of County Mayo tonight :D

What about Howth? We live in Fairview and thought of sitting at the park but it might not be just far enough from the city, am I right?

You're too far south I'm afraid. See sideways map here. You can see any chance ends really around Tipp

The CME hit earth about an hour ago but was a lot weaker than expected.
As its stands now theres Zero chance of seeing the Aurora anywhere in Ireland:(

Too much cloud here to see a thing.

From looking at sites like Spaceweatherlive.com http://www.spaceweatherlive.com/en/auroral-activity

The solar wind speed and density is a lot lower than expected.
The KP index is only KP2 now but would need to be at least KP5 or more (it goes from 0 to 9) to give us any chance to see Aurora from Ireland

I'm going to head out to Loughshinny, between Rush and Skerries

KP is climbing to 3 over last few minutes, it was late hitting and now its late showing strength but its not over yet! Clouds on the other hand...

If you live up north and its clear head out and look for Aurora.
KP-6 now, bright aurora being seen all over Scotland and in northern England.

damn wish I'd seen this earlier--my friends here in Donegal got some cracking pics tonight--green and big red flares-amazing

Ritas shot is from Dooey Beach
Sarahs both taken in Falcarragh with Tory island lights visible in first one

Saw it in north Antrim, looking over the hills towards Rathlin. No photos unfortunately but really breathtaking - much clearer than it was last month.

I kept checking in vain hope every 20 minutes from Julianstown.

Too cloudy. I gave up and went to bed (probably too early!) at midnight.

Thinking about heading north tomorrow night but forecasts aren't great (I think). Does anyone know anything about forecasts for the next few days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭MeteoritesEire

some more cracking shots emerging-FB seemed to be having a hiccup and I couldn't download--lovely one of Dunluce Castle from last night and Giants Causeway too--search facebook for Martina Gardner

seems like everyone who made it out last night got alerts from Aurora Alerts by Softserve on FB

Think the activity has died down now, visible again tonight?

Anyone heading up north tonight to try and view the Aurora is wasting their time unless their going up to the artic circle.
Not a hope of seeing them from Ireland tonight.
