Ex-library Books

Can anybody tell me why libraries get rid of books?
I often buy second-hand books on-line with stamps saying "Withdrawn from X Library". Do libraries give books away that they no longer keep? I recently bought a book on-line that was only published in the last five years!!!
If there are such things as library sales I would love to hear about them.
    Thanks all in advance

    Libraries have limited space.

This limited space is taken up by books.

New books, therefore, must eventually take the place of old books.

    Old books are removed.

It's a question of space in most public libraries.
Some academic libraries would not get rid of their books, as they would have been charged with preserving them for future generation.

Your run-of-the-mill town library, however, has limited space and limited funds. They usually hold regular book sells where they will sell both books from their own stock which no longer seem to be popular or are showing too much wear and tear and books which they might have been given as gifts but which they know would not be of much interest to their readers.
When I was working in a public library in Germany, and elderly reader once brought in boxes full of books - soldier's stories from WW II. There's only so many of those you can have on the shelves.

If you want to find out when your local library is holding the nex sale, just ring them up. Usually it's a fixed date, same time each year.

Low circulation of checkouts and room for new books.
