Looking for some info for my boyfriend. He is an articulated dumper truck driver and the job he hopes to get onto later this year is for a global company that could possibly insist that all dumper drivers have category C&E licences (or so he has been told). So, he'd rather be one step ahead and get the tests done.

I think I have the "steps" he needs to take correct but would appreciate if someone would have a quick look and see if I have missed anything.
    1. Take Category C Theory Test. Submit current full licence with medical/eyesight test and receive back with Category C marked as provisional
    2. Take Category C Rigid Test and apply for full licence
    3. Once full licence received, apply for Category C&E Articulated test
    4. Take some lessons whilst waiting for test date
    5. Take Category C&E test and apply for full licence

I haven't included CPC as he will be driving a dumper on sites. I believe it is only compulsory for professional (on the road) drivers, is this correct?

Lessons - like the new driving licence requirements, will he need to have x amount of lessons with a registered instructor? If so, how many hours?

    Thanks :)

If your boy friend is driving a dump truck on private property there is no need for him to hold a C+E licence,At present there is no specific amount of lessons for either the C or EC,As for not doing the CPC tests you would need to get in touch with the RSA and explain the situation to them.
The RSA would be familiar with people not having to do the CPC tests as all HSE &Fire service personal who would need a truck licence are exempt from having to do them.

    Thanks donkey :-)

He said himself that he only needed rigid, I jumped the gun a bit.

Might get the dump truck card and apply for the post myself as category c was automatically on my UK licence when I passed my driving test.

Sorry to disappoint but on your UK licence will be C1 category, that is rigid up to 7.5 ton, but that might be enough for you anyway.
