I'm Irish but I live in Australia, some Aussie guy has left to play for a French club and everyone is complaining that he has walked out on his country. Don't understand why he can't play for the wallabies still. Irish players go abroad and still play for Ireland. I'm a soccer fan and am struggling to grasp the concept of it, majority of soccer players play in a different country to their own yet still represent their nation in international competition. What is so different about the wallabies to every team/sport?

The Wallabies won't pick players playing outside the country in order to protect the strength of their domestic franchises, also players within the franchises are all centrally contracted meaning there is never a club/country conflict regarding player release for internationals. New Zealand do the very same thing.

There's the geography problem too, it's a lot easier for a French based Irish player to play for Ireland than a French based Aussie/NZer to play for their country.

Aren't Munster and Leinster players centrally contracted too?

Every provincial player is centrally contracted to the IRFU.

But those who aren't can still play for Ireland?

Does that include foreign players who could potentially play against Ireland?

    Different playing seasons as well.
