Your mileage is low enough to consider petrol, any reason not too? I have the 1.4Tsi Passat and it is streets ahead on any of the VW diesels for refinement. Also getting 7.1l/100 which is OK. A post 2008 1.4TSi will be a good deal cheaper than the diesel too.

That's very good as I have the 2.0 CR engine and I am getting 6.5l/100km.

I had a 08 Passat 2.0 tdi (company car). A work mate got the 1.9 tdi at the same time.

    Here are my thoughts:

    1. the 2.0 tdi is 140 bhp, and the 1.9 is 105 bhp. The 2.0 tdi is a beautiful engine, one of the nicest I have ever driven. Enough power to get you into trouble. Cannot for the life of me understand why some VAG engines are 'downrated ' so much (comparing Audi and VW).
    2. the 2.0 tdi is 6 speed, and the 1.9 tdi is 5 speed (I think).
    3. the 1.9 tdi sounds like a tractor engine compared to the 2.0 tdi (you would have to experience both to really appreciate the difference). This is the bigegst difference.
    4. I never had one bit of trouble with my 2.0 tdi. But I understand that earlier 2.0 tdis had trouble but the problem was sorted on later models (including 2008 onwards). I also heard that the 1.9 tdi engine was 'bullet proof'.

Me personally, having a lot of experience of the 2.0 tdi and a little bit of experience of the 1.9 tdi would opt for the 2.0 tdi all day long.

2008 was the change over year where VW moved from the old 2.0 TDi PD unit to the newer 2.0 TDi CR unit. The CR unit doesn't suffer the same issues as some of the PD units. No real horror stories so far with the CR unit either six years on. Timing belt interval on the CR unit is 100k miles or 5 years.

How high is the milage on the current passat?
If you're main reason for changing is because milage is high I'd be driving it until it started giving problems. No point getting rid of a good car because the miles are high.

They only ever sold the 1.4 TSi Passat in 122bhp form.

I have a 2008 Passat estate 2.0tdi 140bhp highlife with a DSG box. Being my first diesel I was abut concerned about lack of power (coming from a GTI) and refinement.

But after a year of driving I have to say I am really impressed by the refinement, economy and power. Ideally I would of liked the 170bhp model!

In my opinion the 2.0tdi cr is best suited to the DSG box. Effortless driving and very smooth.
