This short work has probably been the most influential text on all branches of Christianity outside of the New Testament. If you have the time to read it you will understand why. Traditionally it was believed to be the work of St Dionysius the Areopagite mentioned in Acts but scholars now believe it was probably written by a Non-Chalcedonian mystic some time in the 5 th century as it first emerged among the Non-Chalcedonian party. That said Maximus the Confessor wrote a commentary on it showing that it is capable of being understood within a Chalcedonian frame work.

Thanks for the link. As theological matters are not a strong suit, have you any recommendations for a secondary source that puts this in context. I've looked in Chadwicks 'Early Christianity', which references the author but only in passing.

Its dealt with in some deal in Vladimir Lossky's The Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church in some detail; but honestly its not that long. This particular work is more a mystical than a theological in the way we usually think of theology text.

Here is Pope Benedict discussing the body of work attributed to Dionysius the Areopagite; http://www.zenit.org/en/articles/on-pseudo-dionysius-the-areopagite
