06 passat - get rid or hold on?

Hi folks, have a 06 passat 1.9 with 104k miles. Now the clutch and fly wheel will need to be replaced in the next few months as there is a notice starting to come. This will cost about 700. My tax is also due at the end of the month which is another 600e.
I hadn't really thought about trading up as it's a good car that gave me little trouble but just considering it now with all these costs and also the longer I have it the less I will get for it.
Just looking for people's opinions on whether to trade up or hold on to it.
    Thanks!

Great engine, if you are happy with the car i'd fix and keep it.

You won't trade up much for 700 euro. If you want to change the car as your sick if it then go ahead and change it. But if you like the car and are only changing to save money then that makes no sense it will cost you more money no matter what you get. Tax is a given really so can't count that as maintenance. But if you like the car and spending 700 euro on it will have it right then it's a no brainier keep it. Also that passat will depreciate at a slower rate than any newer car.

I had a 06 2.0 TDI Passat with 243k km on it and changed it in the summer - mostly because I fancied a change.. the car itself was still running fine, but also I knew that with the mileage on it I'd only get buttons for it later on (despite a full on-time service history).

Flywheels and clutches though are consumables on any modern car so in reality there's nothing wrong with your car.. it just needs routine replacements after 7 years and 100,000 miles (/km?)

In reality you're talking about 700 quid. Tax will have to be paid regardless and I'm sure the cost to change to something else will be a LOT higher - plus there's the hassle and potential risk of buying an unknown vs a car you know to be solid and which has served you well.

It depends on what you're thinking of changing to and what money you have to spend on it (remember that "cheap tax" on newer cars takes a lot to recoup when you spend thousands to upgrade), but unless you fancy a change and have done the sums I'd stay put.

Changing the car because of a flywheel will not make financial sense.
If on the other hand you feel that you will be changing anyway in the coming months, well then I guess it makes more sense but the simple figures will show its cheaper to keep it.

Well no other Diesel engine will ever compare to that one. From a financial point of view though I'd be thinking it could be a good time to change.

Thanks for the replies. Ya I guess I should hold on as it really had been a reliable car. The other half has a 00 golf which passes NCT last week so we were considering holding on to that and trading up. Just out of interest any ideas on what to trade up to? Was thinking of avensis or maybe Mazda 6.
