Recommend me a good budget zoom lens

I'm on the brink of splashing out on a 70D and I'd like to pick up a good zoom while I'm at it. I simply cannot afford f2.8 glass at the moment so I am wondering if anyone can recommend me a good alternative made by Tamron or Sigma perhaps?

    Spec
    F4, 70-200mm or 70-300mm or thereabouts
    Budget - €300-500 max

I'm looking for as much sharpness / image quality as I can get across the zoom / aperture range. Image stabilization would be nice although I might do a lot of tripod shooting so could live without it. Not too worried about noisy zoom motors either. Just want to get as much sharpness and quality across the zoom and aperture range as I can.

    Many thanks for any help.

Keep eye on Adverts, sometimes you come across 70-200 F2.8 Sigmas for €500.

I've just ordered the Canon f4-5.6 55-250 IS II. It's dirt cheap and getting good reviews. It'll get me started at least. I already have the nifty fifty and Sigma 10-20 so it'll give me a decent range until I can afford something better. Budget is a little stressed as I have a new 70D on the way also. What do you think fellas? Anyone else own this lens ?

haven't used that lens, but after using cheap 70-300mm's before, i'd never skimp on a telephoto again. it's just proper annoying! i know you already bought the lens, but maybe save up for the 70-200 f/4L .. defo a better lens, and worth the extra few quid.

I know, but what I'm after right now is a budget lens. It'll tie me over for a year or so until I can afford something decent. I'm weary of buying any lens secondhand, you just never know what it's been through so when I do but a decent zoom, it's gonna cost me. Thus this thread is really a budget thing for now.
