I had a missed call from a private number earlier today, and I just answered a private number to hear 'This is an automated message... there is no need for alarm or for you to take action as a result of this call.... we are just verifying numbers on our database'.

    Then the call ended.

Has anyone any idea what the hell this is?

Was the Caller ID Private or Unknown?

It sounds like a telemarketing company dialing a list of numbers to see which works. I doubt it would be eircom as they can tell which lines are active obviously.

Maybe there is a rich Nigerian prince who would like me to store 1 million dollars in my account for a short time?

    Nah :D

I asked if it was private or unknown because an unknown number is likely to originate some outside Ireland. There is a slight difference.

Sounds more like a marketing company testing numbers or a scam auto dialler to me. There is not much your provider can do about it really.

    Okay, cheers.
