My wife and I would like to go for 10 nights in June. What's it like there and is there much to do? We're looking for a relaxing beach holiday and some nice restaurants at night. Can anyone recommend any hotels please, preferably on the beach?

I absolutely loved Alghero. There are a couple of beaches but the main town beach is not all that great. I would recommend staying in the Old Town and taking the local bus towards Fertilla, nicer beaches and not as packed.

Nightlife seems to consist of family run restaurants followed by a stroll around the old town with a gelato in the main square. It's VERY quiet but a beautiful place - lovely people, great weather and sparkling clean.

If budget allowed I would suggest the Catalunya overlooking the harbour. Lots of boat trips available out to Neptune's Grotto but bring the sealegs !

Wow sounds great! Thanks for the advice on the beaches, will definitely check out hotels in the old town. We aren't looking for hectic nightlife so it suits us perfectly :) Might take a look at the Catalunya too if we can stretch the budget!

We have been regular visitors to Alghero over the past few years. Normally do self - catering, or rent private apartments.

There are a few hotels on the Beachfront - the Lido, on the North side of the town, closer to the nicer beaches. Have stayed in the San Marco, which was ok, but about a 2.5 km walk to the Old Town. Friends have stayed in the Alma di Alghero, which is a little closer to town and recommended it. There is only one hotel in the Old Town proper (within the old walls), the San Francesco, it was an old monestry - again friends have stayed that and liked it.

The nightlife in Alghero is not hectic at all, there are no nightclubs etc. in the town, but a few of the bars can be lively. Good food to be had both in the old town and beyond.

I think June is a great time to visit, long days on the beach and a little cooler at night - plus the holiday season is only really beginning, so it is a little quieter than the rest of the Summer (esp August - v. v. busy).

    Enjoy!!

Just wanted to add that you could look at hiring a car and going elsewhere in Sardinia. If beautiful beaches are you top priority, you should really check out the north coast.

As for Alghero we previously stayed in Hotel Soleado (along the Lido), pretty basic and road between hotel and beach is very busy.

Last time we stayed in the Carlos V the far side of the old town, no beach near by but amazing pool. When fed up with pool life hired a car and headed for the quieter beaches between Alghero and Bosa.

Last but not least I would highly recommend this restaurant http://www.masterchefoneill.com/O/default.asp
Get a table on the walls, great food and a beautiful setting.

I've been to Alghero twice, absolutely gorgeous spot. Stayed in the San Francesco and it was grand, nice to be in the centre.

Would definitely recommend a car for a couple of day trips if you're going there for 10 days. We took a trip towards Porto Torres and then headed west from there, amazing beaches and in June mid-week should be reasonably quiet. Think we headed to Lago di Baratz on the way back, lovely.

There are some lively bars there as well, just at Piazza della Misericordia there are a few that share the square.

Spotted that "new" restaurant during the summer, but never managed to make a visit. My wife's Aunt did later in the year and gave a great review.

Other interesting restaurants include Mabrouk (featured in Ottolenghi's recent program on the food of Sardinia) and Al Tuguri.

This is making me pine for the place......
