    Hello,

    Have a 1984 VW Beetle.

Tried vrt'ing it last september so it wasnt thirty years old.
    They Wanted 1200? :O

So My question is can i change ownership now? And Re-inspect and vrt at the standard 200 quid as its 30 years old now?

    Thanks

doubtful. They already know it was in the state and that's the date they go on

..and is it 30 years old already? It goes by date of first registration.

How much detail did you give at the first enquiry?, If you presented the car for assessment you're goosed.

I know it doesn't help you OP but about five years ago I imported a 1986 2.6 litre Rover SD1 VDP and they charged me the minimum 300 and something euro. This was before the nct was doing inspections. That charge for an 84 beetle seems very steep. Mind you yearly tax was a bit steep.

He could do a sale to his cousin in the north back dated & sold back to him now.

but if it's not registered in the state (as it wouldn't be, he hasn't paid the VRT so he wouldn't have gotten the new reg no or the new log book) then a "change of ownership" would be an academic exercise only.

I think the best course of action would be to wait for the anniversary of the date of first registration, get the new VRT rate (€200 flat rate) and then they'll charge penalties based on how long it's been in the state. The penalties are a small percentage of the VRT rate, any small percentage of €200 isn't going to be a kings ransom, is it?

Going through the process before the car turned 30 was a mistake. Waiting for the 30th anniversary then fudging the date of entry to the state would have been a better approach. Too late for that now though :(

I don't think that will work if it's already been assessed. They will want the amount due as at the date of import.

When the car turns 30 go in and try again . Can't see you having a problem .

That's it in a nutshell - for the sake of waiting a few months

Wait until it is 30 yrs. old.( Check the V5 for date of 1st Reg. in U.K.). Take the car & V5 to N.I. and get a New M.O.T. to prove that the car was out of the country since it was last inspected. Get a invoice with a N.I. address, and you should not have any problems.

Not if you re-export it. You don't have to import it just because you've rolled up to to the VRT centre. Faced with a too-big quote, you are entitled to just say 'no thanks' and drive it back out of the country.

I rang them this morning on this as I'm looking at a 911 in the UK and Revenue WON'T give a VRT quote on it 'til you turn up with the car. You have to buy it first and then they'll tell you how much, when you present it at NCT office. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

So the lady at NCTS today said that if I get a quote that's either too high to pay (as in more than I expected), I have two options:
    1. Pay and appeal
    2. Re-export the car, and I have 30 days to do so.

Sounds to me like OP goes for option 2.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Yeah, but I reckon you don't have to record with them that you've "brought the car back". So facts can be somewhat vague.

I'd be saying 'The car was re-exported that day to NI, and's been there until yesterday when I brought it back down' - once the Gardai/Customs haven't pulled you in it there's no record of it being in the state ;)

Sorry i was meaning to write back to say how i got on!

I rang them up and was completely honest and just said id pay the 1200 euro. Then they turned around and said they wanted to re inspect the car seeing as it was so long ago since last one.

Did that and received a quote of 221 euro if im correct. Can't fully remember. So basically i only had vrt of 200 and the rest was a cancellation fee for first inspection.

So lets just say i was lucky :L anyways the beetles mowing it along in its zv plates now :)

Great news. You must have a got someone with common sense rather than some jobsworth.

To be fair to them I've only had good experiences there.
