Paul Nicholls Stable Jockey?

    http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news/article/465/9105614/big-decision-still-to-be-made

According to that article, no decision yet as to who will ride Big Bucks this season. From the tenor of what Andy Stewart says, it is unlikely to be Daryl Jacob. So that's possibly no Big Bucks, and given what the owner/ trainer said about Silviniaco Conti, no ride on him in the Gold Cup. And Jacob is apparently the stable jockey.

While the context is obviously different, this reminds me a little of the Joe Tizzard situation. Doesn't get any big rides, loses the job and Nicholls says the owners had a gun to his head, couldn't have done anything different etc. Obviously things like that are the realities of modern racing, but I still think Nicholls has loyalty issues that other top trainers do not have.

Yeah I get the impression Jacob was given the title of stable jockey for loyalty reasons and any day now it will be confirmed that someone else will be given that title, It all started when he said Noel Fehily would ride SC and Jacob went to ride Al ferof, clearly SC is the better horse than Al ferof and has a good chance winning the gold cup come march, Jacob reminds me of Danny Mullins with his style of riding......pretty poor

Pretty sure Jacob chose Al Ferof..

No, he didn't. Nicholls instructed him to go to Ascot for Al Ferof comeback rather than ride SC in the Charlie Hall then soon enough afterwards said both jockeys would be staying on their respective horses.

Even if Jacob had chosen Al Ferof (which I didn't see indicated anywhere) there's clearly a bigger issue. I don't think anyone could really be oblivious to that...I also forgot to namecheck Sam Thomas above - while to be fair he made mistakes, he was discarded pretty quickly/ easily.

i think nicholls said jacob was better going to ascot as he had al ferof and zarkandar running there.its fairly obvious though alright that their not 110% behind jacob schofield seems to have the irving ride as well and with fehily on silviano plus twiston davies riding more and more for him too

As unconstructive as the below sounds
I wouldn't let Sam Thomas on a ride on mower to cut the grass. I don't think he's even know how to start it.
Jacob comes across like a very likeable character but I've never once seen him
Pull anything out of the bag on average horses or when it gets down to a tooth and nail battle..

    Pretty harsh.

What about the National winning ride on Neptune de C?

Re Thomas - give him any credit at all for the Gold Cup win, no?

Grand national doesnt make you a good jockey its pure luck sure robbie power and liam treadwell won nationals and the pair a them are hopeless, and jacob wouldnt have won if McLernon rode the 2nd a bit stronger

Nicholls has zero loyalty look at the way he treated fehily thomas and even christian williams,he wont even give young derham a ride lately.

Well its all subjective really, but to make out like a National winning jockey couldn't ride his girlfriend is a bit much.

Arent they related? Is he still giving his daughter horses? her ride at Doncaster a while back was one of the worse Ive seen.

    yes, Derham is his nephew
his daughter rode her first winner in a pt to pt last week
expect to see a few more attempts at her trying to ride a track winner
can't be as bad as the most recent effort you referred to
have to agree re Nicholls loyalty - only person he was loyal to was Ruby, but since that relationship is over, he'll suit himself
plenty of top jocks around now for Big Bucks, though can't see him returning at the same level

Ill give the national win some credit
    Denman won the gold cup

Not to turn it into a bashing thread but Sam Thomas is so bad its no coincidence nobody gives him a ride.

Denman was never the same horse after that gold cup, he was absolutely leg less finishing.

There was so much racing Stephen's day he got a few rides, I genuinely thought in the few weeks before he must have retired. Some fall from grace riding Denman couldn't get a ride in a brothel at the minute. 15 rides in the whole month of december

When I seen him nervous and stammering his way through the morning line...I never ever felt so sorry for a man in my whole Life...The morning like is not the finished article. They welcomed a tipster on Saturday last week and introduced him with "you tipped up 9 horses over the festive period and not one of them won"...I was gob smacked....

Nope, he got the leg up on a machine who you just had to sit on. All he had to do was give him a bit of rein when he did. This is pre heart problem Denman as post heart problem Denman was much trickier.

Derham doesnt ride much as Nichols is trying to keep his claim. I would generally watch for Derham on board as there is no point in putting him up unless the horse is going to go very close if you are keeping his claim.

Sam Twiston Davies getting the ride on Big Bucks. A kick in the balls for Jacob.

Wouldnt say jacob is too bothered, the rider of BB is in a no win situation,if the horse comes back and wins his few races the horse gets all the credit if he isnt himself and gets beaten in the cleeve he'll retire and jacob will be on zarkandar
    anyways

I dont rate STD at all tbh hes average sure everytime the new one gets beaten he crys and blames himself who wants a liability like that on Big Bucks.

Bit of a strange decision. Be interesting to see how he gets on with him!

I don't rate Jacob either but I'm sure he wouldn't mind a slice of the prize money BB will mop up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭LutherBlissett

Yeah I've never really rated Jacob either and I was surprised he got the job. Maybe it was a sort of stop gap measure?

Whatever the explanation this is a major blow to him - one of the yard's biggest owners declining to use his services for their most high profile horse. It's hard not to see which way the wind is blowing, you would have to feel sorry for him.

It really is another example of no matter how powerful the Nicholls yard gets, he just will not stand up to owners for his jockey.

Re Thomas - I think he was fine before he made mistakes on big Nicholls horses, that was a major blow to the confidence and that clearly affected him. Before that he had done more than just ride Denman for Nicholls (plenty of other big Saturday wins in 08-09) and come on, riding one of the favs in a Gold Cup takes nerve that not everyone has. It's not a case of luck/ being in the right place at the right time no matter how much the detractors claim it is.

I'd tell Stewart to shove the ride on Celestial Halo and any more of his horses up his arse now.

Was hoping Fehily was going to get the gig.
