    Hi all

I am new to the world of DJ 'ing. I do not own any equipment yet but what I came across is free online DJ mixers and have been doing mixing on my laptop with online sites like until.am or partycloud.fm etc

My question is, Is it a right way to start learning mixing or do i need to buy the equipment?

I am into house and techno.

    Thanks

If you enjoy beat matching then software isn't the way to go.
If you purely enjoy mixing/effects then those sites will give you a feel for it, if you enjoy that, buy a cheap reloop controller before spending big.

The main thing is to know your tunes inside out. Then trying to see how they work together would require some software and mixer. 100e will easily get you a decent controller (eg hercules rmx, very solid unit) with built in soundcard and a pair of small speakers and headphones would be cheap too so if you can invest some money with your time then that would be my recommendation.

This guys seems willing to take 100e. I've sold two rmx's for a little over that in the past as I had upgraded to an all in one mixer/controller solution. Its available brand new for around 200e but you could get a good condition one second hand from a buyer with good feedback.

it's not bad but quite a plasticy feel and not much weight to it. I had one as a backup but sold it quickly. I think the hercules mx is the best (legacy) controller in that it's solid and heavy enough to use as a weapon :) I gigged with one for years. The other way to go is cd players and mixer (seperates or combi) but more expensive and cumbersome especially for a beginner.

Worth the inverstment at that price I reckon. The ad says it works with Virtual Dj which is good, as you can download the home version of that software for free.

I read some reviews about hercules and many said something about software not being good. What exactly does it mean? Do I need to go with mixer which is compatible with what kind of software?

the rmx is compatible with traktor and virtual dj for sure, maybe serato and they are the main programs used. They maybe meant that it was difficult to setup the software with drivers, soundcards etc. To be honest that does happen with most controllers and I was never fully confident of gigging live with a laptop and controller until I got a mac. They just work without any messing around. But for you a beginner with a laptop and various dj software forums then you will be fine. Most of the programs will let you download trial versions too so you can try them all.

Ideally you want to see it up and running a dj software and a have a mess round on it. Otherwise if you are meeting someone in a car park (:)) check all the knobs, buttons and faders are present and function without major resistance and you get the usb and software disc although the usb is generic and the drivers and software are downloadable.
Most sellers on adverts are decent but feedback is useful.
