    Hi all

I recently have started liking VW touareg jeeps and thinking is it a good buy. Looking at 04 to 06 models.

Anyone has experience with them to share?

I currently drive 04 bmw 530D, the new shape.

    Thanks

    OP
Didn't own one but next door neighbour and a mate both had one around 07-10 and I can't remember them saying too much positive about them.
I can't remember exact details but they wouldn't recommend them.

That's a big step down from a 530d. Do you need to go off road/tow something heavy?

Don't go for the 2.5 try and get the 3.0l. 2.5l way underpowered for its size.

I know someone who had an 05 2.5l version and changed for 07 3.0l he owned both of them from new. He felt the 2.5l was a little weak when it came to overtaking.

In saying that he never had any problems with them, both where automatics and towed very little. But the 3.0l is a high miler, and is still going strong.

Maybe VW did some changes to the engine when they gave the 07 a facelift.

Thanks. Mixed reviews on it. How is the fuel consumption for 3litre jeep. i guess worse than 3 lite car i drive?

Big 4x4s are not that economical, they are big, heavy and have the aerodynamics of a brick wall. They are primarily designed for ability and ruggedness rather than fuel economy.

I thought you had just taxed the car and decided to keep it? Having second thoughts?

Think I am just bored of driving the same thing plus selling a car with one year road tax would be a good selling point:)

It would but you are 1.5k down after taxing it!

it would be very expensive on fuel

As are all Tourags tbh, mid-late 20's mpg most of the time I would say.

    Wow.
That's even worse than I thought it would be.
And did I read here before that servicing is prohibitively expensive too.

The high tax/low mpg would be a killer. I drive a smaller 4x4 and I thought it's 38mpg was tough.

I looked at 9 of them when I was in the market for a large SUV........and i came to the conclusion that they are a total shytebox .......propshafts issues, water ingress fecking up shed loads of modules, you name it......

Bought an X5 in the end.

Is the X5 diesel or petrol ? Is she hard run?
I had a friend with a petrol one and all he would say is less than 40mpg. ;)

I was considering a Touareg (a v10 one) before I bought the 535d. Didn't need the 4 wheel drive or anything, just like the look of them - and the sheer nonsensical v10 diesel.

Any full size 4*4 - like a range rover -will not break over 30 mpg in normal driving (with the possible exceptions of the newest model)

Diesel, 26 mpg avg, the best I got was 32 on a run (once) .......

great wagon tho' - great engine, fully loaded, air suspension, the works , not without their faults tho' eiter, but better than any toerag...

and you'll rarely see over 30 mpg with any off them.....

For anyone else looking at this thread and seeing as there have been no actual responses from people that own touaregs.....

I have had one for the last 4 months or so. I was driving an 05 E61 520d and just fancied a change, and fancied the Touareg. TBH it was a bad move. Don't get me wrong, the Touareg is the nicest SUV I have driven and I tried several others before making the move and picking the VW over the others. On the road it is lovely. Much more comfortable than the BMW but much less enjoyable if that makes sense. A much nicer place to sit. I have taken it off road a few times for the craic and it is indeed a great machine off road.

    Cons:
So far I have had to replace the water pump and centre bearing for the prop shaft. Both are known issues in these cars. The water pump issue only affects them up until 2007 I think when tehy fitted a proper water pump with metal fins instead of the plastic fins which simply break off. I got a good local indy to do that job and it cost €500 which is damn reasonable seeing as I had to replace all the oil and coolant.

The Centre bearing for the prop shaft is just ludicrous. It apparently (based on Treg forums) goes every 60K miles or so. I've seen the one taken off my car and it is pitifully small. It is actually the rubber support on the housing that goes rather than the bearing itself. And this issue also affects the Porche Cayenne and the Audi Q7 BTW. VW only supply you with a full rear prop shaft and bearing assembly which is quite expensive. Again my local Indy did the trick. We removed the prop shaft, sent it off to Newry Motor Works to get a new bearing on it and got it back on again. All for just about €400

Again... I love the car, but I am on the point of selling it now. I'd go back to a E60. Maybe a petrol 525 seeing as they are a dying breed.
