Moral guidance needed

I'm living in rented accommodation. 4 way house share with random people whom I didn't know before moving in.

There was some post in over Christmas, two letters of which are to an old housemate. The two letters have been there the best part of a month at this stage.

I looked at one of them and could kind of see through the paper that it's a book token.

I've no way of tracking this person down, and am contemplating opening it and pocketing the book token.

But, I've always prided myself on my integrity, and feel this would be stealing. But the alternative is too much like hard work (chase the landlord for the old housemates current address, pay for postage and forward it on).

Can't figure out the best way to deal with this, I can't ignore it any longer, every time I see the letter I start analysing it again.

I know this is a trivial thing but first world problems need first world solutions :)

It is stealing. You've got the lads name, drop him a message on Facebook and ask if he wants it sent on - if he does tell him he'll have to bear the (weighty) costs of postage. If he's not bothered? Free book token AND immaculate integrity :D

You should go on the internet and ask people what you should do.

How is asking the landlord for an address and posting an envelope too much work? More work than posting it on AH?

Peoples own fault for not using return address anymore

Also, make sure you ask the most piss-taking forum.

    Return to sender?

If he's on Facebook, find him and ask him what he wants. He might drop by to pick it up, or he might tell you to keep it. If he's not on Facebook - not everyone is - ask your landlord if he has his mobile number and drop him a text.

ETA: Just saw Bottlebrushs post above, and that's also a good idea. If the senders details are inside write the address on the envelope, reseal it and write not known at this address return to sender.

Write "Gone Away" on the envelope and put it into a postbox. An Post will return it to sender if there is an address inside.

Make a paper plane out of the envelope and see how far it can be thrown

Find the former room-mate's address. Then use the book voucher to purchase a book that they will enjoy/tolerate/be offended by and post it on.

The token could be from a family member they haven't spoken to in awhile, and who they feel might doesn't really care about them all that much and so not getting that letter could be some pretty big butterfly wings. I'd do your best to try and get that letter to them.

If I'm too lazy to find an ex Tennant to forward on letters from the HSE about medical appointments for their children then I probably shouldn't be offering advice on book token misappropriation

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,925 ✭✭✭✭anncoates

    Ask advice on Internet.

Disregard advice if it doesn't concur with what you want to do, which is steal the tokens.

It doesn't matter what anyone says, we all know you're going to keep the book token. ;)

Its highly likely the sender may wonder why they got no thanks and ask if him if he received it. He may be on to you guys then asking what you done with it. The others in the house have presumably seen the letter so if you pocket it they might know what you've done. Then they'll get suspicious you might be taking their stuff next time something in the house goes missing...

Do the decent, right and honourable thing get a forwarding address from the landlord.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

That will only encourage the recipient to continue in their lazy ways, not alerting people to the fact that they have moved. Far better like I suggested earlier to mark any post "Gone Away" and put it in a postbox for An Post to deal with. It will get back to the sender if there is a return address and they can do a little bit of work as well in tracing the whereabouts of their friend.

Have you ever tried to find a person by name alone, no address or idea of location? It will usually provide numerous possibilities if it's a common name, so what do you do then? Message every single one of them? Unless he has a very unusual name then it's pointless and not everyone is on FB.

Use it, no point in it going to waste.

Try to get address to forward on. If not just leave it there, people sometimes come back to see if any post came. It's not worth it, you will feel like sh1t if you take.

Rule of thumb, if its less than a million euro its not worth taken. What is your good name worth?

A month isnt that long for it to be there, try get a forwarding address, but would the landlord even have that, probably not. Try though and then if not just keep it, not point in it going to waste

What is the value on this book token do we know?

Time you spent typing and posting here, a simple phone call to landlord or finding him on FB would have done the job ;)

just leave it there with other letters the person may receive and let the landlord know they are there, it is his/ hers responsibility to see after things like that
