I'm looking at a couple of cars at the moment to buy, I ran a check on motortax.ie to see if there had been a change of ownership in the last 3 months.

The results came back on one to say no change in the last 3 months, however it does say "Purchased by a Dealer on : xx/xx/2013". The car is for sale privately, anyone know if this would mean a dealer selling private on the side or would it be sold by the dealer to a reseller or another punter who is then selling it on? If I was to look at the VLC, contact the owner on the VLC and verify the dealer bought it would that be enough or should I just avoid?

Yes not sure, I'm going to call about it tomorrow. Seems odd as the time from sale to dealer to now is less than 10 working days.

What Car is it, and year ?
If it's a slightly older (or hard to shift) model, the dealer has probably sold it to a small-time Trader who operates from home.
He will list himself as a private seller for a number of reasons... no warranty given, no need to bother the tax man, etc.
Where did you find the car ?
If on DoneDeal see if the seller has any other Ads listed. Google his phone number and see if there are any results.
All the above does not mean that there is anything wrong with the car, just that the Dealer didn't want the hassle of selling it and simply sold it on for around the same money as he allowed on the trade-in price.
