Well, a friend recommended it to me so I had a look. I wasn't impressed, especially with the prices.

I have used it a few times to book accommodation and have had no problems with it at all.

Used in NYC where hotels are stupid expensive. Seemed they were a fairly professional crea (the landlords), had a lovely en-suite room with own door (essentially a hotel room minus the reception) for about half the price of a similar hotel.

I used it a couple of times a while back. The last time I was looking though their fees have become very expensive for what you're getting, so won't be using them again. Pity.

Short term lets are illegal on Manhattan...you're taking a big risk dealing with a landlord rather than a hotel.

It's illegal if the landlord isn't home at the time, which invariably they find some way around.

There's ongoing debate/lobbying about the issue (in New York only). There's thousand of properties available in New York, there's one landlord who's been investigated. This has a long way to run.

And again, this is related to NY only, OP could be off anywhere.

I used Air B'n'B to book a studio apartment in Paris a few years back. I spent a while researching before picking a location near the Sacre Coeur. It worked out really well for me and I would recommend it.

Used it to book a whole apartment for myself and a couple of mates going to Chicago a couple of years back. Absolutely no problems, cheaper then hotels and nicer vibe then a hotel. Would recommend it myself.

Used AirBnB once in Cadiz. It was a busy time, so price-wise, it worked out really well. Clean, well-serviced apartment to ourselves Only complaint was the 15/20 minute delay waiting for the landlord to show up and a little confusion at check-out on account of the lady not speaking English good.

I always found it really expensive.

Friend of mine is renting out a room in his place and making a killing apparently.

    I usually use:

    http://www.homelidays.co.uk/

    Or

    http://www.homeaway.co.uk/

Used them in a good few countries now (Belgium,Germany,Portugal,Greece) and had no problems.

You never pay the rack rate in the US, stayed at the Andaz on Wall street for 85 euros a night when hotels.com was coming up 620 euro for 4 nights.

Keep an eye on the Flyertalk hotel deals page, sometimes theres very good deals for New York there:
