Interior leak in VW Bora

    Hey guys,

There is water gathering in the driver side front and rear footwells of my 2001 Bora and I cannot identify where it is coming from. To my mind, it seems to be coming up from underneath if this is possible? The reason I say that is because the pedal area is dry which would suggest that it is not coming down from the bonnet.

The Passenger side is completely dry also.

Has anyone dealt with this before?

    Any help appreciated.

Open the bonnet and have a look in the corners at the base of the windscreen - is there any water gathering in there? If so, poke your fingers in there and find and unblock the drain channels.

Hi you should maybe check the coolant level as it could be the heater matrix leaking.

Have you a sunroof? If your sure it's water and not coolant, take up the carpet and get in the car with a torch and have someone hose the car. Could be a seal gone, blocked drain or if it has a sunroof the drains of it could be blocked.

it could be foam seals on the inner panel of the door, not the rubber seals you see when you open the door.

Yellow strip in this pic, it's a foam seal that rots and leaks after a while causing water to get over the door sill into the footwells.

There is no sunroof in the car so cant be that. Regarding the door sills, I have checked them and they are all bone dry, no moisture at all. I did think that it might the windscreen at first but surely the area around the foot pedals would also be wet or am I wrong altogether?

The other thing of note is that the carpet under the seat (so inbetween the back footwell and the front footwell) is also dry which makes it seem like the water is rising up directly below the two footwells.

Might need to get the carpet up :(

This might not be relevant at all but I got cruise control retro fitted two months ago. Would this involve working around the windscreen?

Water moves in mysterious ways - I had 2 inches of water in the footwells of a Mk3 Golf last week and no sign of any wet higher up - opened the bonnet and saw water on both sides ahead of the windscreen. When I unblocked the drain hole I got a torrent of water coming over and around the front wheel. As the lads said, though, it could be coming from any one of many places - the front of the windscreen is a very easy one to spot, so I'd check it first on that basis alone.

Would this require the removal of the windscreen wipers and the tray?

Nope, all you have to do is open the bonnet and look in the corners beneath the base of the windscreen where leaves collect.
