Can anyone advise as to how I could get a Samsung LCD tv that I bought in USA while I was living there to work in Ireland...I can power it up but no sound or picture....is there a converter box needed or something else? Thanks in advance

A Saorview set-top connected to an aerial and to the TV should get you the Irish Saorview channels

What is the model # of the TV?
What connectors are available on the TV?

The Alba STB linked to above has scart and HDMI outputs.

Sky and UPC will provide you with the necessary box if you subscribe to their services.

There is an issue because US tv's normally do not have the correct chipset for European TV standard's which while they are now digital , they are still based on different framerates and line standards, a hangover from the analogue days.

Conversely, European TV's are likely to work in the USA.

Is there anything I can do to get around this?

Unfortunately while HDMI has the appearance of a world standard, thats where it ends.

I suppose you could get a US DVD or Blueray player and US games console but is it really worth the effort?

A quick google suggests that there is no digital converter box out there.

Other than that get a PAL to NTSC converter and convert the scart output from your sky box to NTSC analogue.

With TV's so cheap here, I be inclined to just buy a new one.

Most non-Saorview approved (and Non-Freeview/freeSat) Terrestial/Satellite boxes for sale here can actually be set to output 60Hz HDMI standards (with 525-line NTSC on SCART)

The common (in this country) Ferguson combo Satellite/Terrestrial boxes certainly can.

The conversion results in some noticeable 'judder' effects with moving objects

However in the OP's other thread about this here:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057119153
he says that he cannot see the TV's OWN menus. That suggests other trouble.

How about voltage? Don't the Americans use 110v? Compared to our 220v?

Yes, the OP says he has a transformer in the other thread (in >Cable...) about this. (There were two threads created about this).

    Any update from the OP?

The OP should indeed post that info as it may be of some help in the thread if others can look up specs online.
