There doesnt seem to be a thread on this yet, please merge with existing if there is.

Watched this the other night and loved the simplicity and charm of it all. James Gandolfini stars in his second last ever feature and his performance has convinced me that I'll finally get around to watching the Sopranos this year (me being the last TV and film fan in the country to do so).

Julia Louis Dreyfus from Veep plays the female lead and its good enough to make you wonder why she doesnt get more film roles. The on screen chemistry between the two is amongst the best of recent years and the running time flies by.

Decent film I thought. Wasn't as predictable as I presumed in was going to be.

Bono's daughter played the precocious teen quite well, be interesting to see her in something a little meatier than what she has been in so far.

I'm looking forward to this, only got into Soprano's last year and the more I watch James Gandolfini in it the more upset I am that he's gone, absolutely gifted man he was.

I think the first step in creating a watchable romantic comedy is having characters that are at least interesting but preferably likeable (most mainstream rom-coms fail this absolutely). Enough Said passes that, thankfully. There's a chemistry between Louis-Dreyfus and Gandolfini that makes this film much more engaging than the relatively bog standard, contrived 'narrative' that drives it. They both offer excellent performances, creating a believable, flawed but ultimately endearing pair where you do care for their various outcomes. The side characters also aren't painted in shades of black & white, instead offering their own subtleties and depths. But it's the core romance that keeps it interesting and eventually charming. I found myself rooting for a happy ending, and while there are few surprises there's definitely a bittersweet vibe to it that can be quite moving (and the lighthearted references to Gandolfini's weight and health add a sad but poignant extra layer of poignancy). A key sequence near the end works well despite the vomitous easy listening crap playing over it ;)

The performances carry the film, though, and while Nicole Holofcener's script is solid and, in some ways, intelligent, the direction is alas pretty insipid. I've seen sitcom episodes that look more cinematic, and there's something about the way the film is edited that makes it seem like it's in an unnatural rush to get through scenes and onto the next one. The 'high concept' plot provides a few interesting moments, although at other times is overly contrived and distracting. It's a film with pretty much nothing worth noting aesthetically, and I could easily have seen myself warming to it more with a little bit more artistry. As is the performances are strong enough and the characters interesting enough to at least keep us interested.

Holofcener continuously shies away from littering her movies with artistic flourishes and they are all the better for it in my opinion.

Her minimalist aesthetic works in tandem with her restrained story telling style but maybe less so with this movie given the unnecessary plot contrivances.

    It is bizarre, isn't it?

Presumably she doesn't like doing films too much or wasn't at all keen on the options available to her? Being a billionaire or whatever amount it is she's heiress to, she certainly doesn't need the money, like.
