    I was trying the above but cannot do the last bit, the free transform handles do not appear.

    I'm only getting used to Photoshop myself and have done an exercise were free transform handles are part of it. If you are stuck let me know and i will root out the notes.

    I think there is a free transform tool, and the handles allow you to alter the geometry of the image. Try looking @ the view , window or some tab at the top of the page aswell and click to view the transform handles.

    The only way i can getvthefre transform is to add another layer. Then when i crop part of the new layer is visible

    Yeah I know what you mean. That has to be done to enable the free transform tool I guess.

    There are plenty of videos on Youtube and Adobe's website is helpful. Did you try them?
